Walk Mate

Discover new walk paths while staying active.

While fitness apps prioritize runners with advanced metrics, walkers have been overlooked. Walk Mate is the first iOS app built exclusively for walkers seeking variety and discovery. Its intelligent route generator creates fresh, circular paths daily, with safety first navigation that adapts to time of day. Set your preferred distance, rate your walks, and let the app learn your preferences. No more decision fatigue, just open WalkMate and rediscover your neighborhood one step at a time.

What do you think? …

I realized that most apps focus on runners, but walkers represent a huge community that deserves better than just step counters. We walk for mental clarity, for gentle exercise, for exploration and not to hit PRs or track split times. Walk Mate was born from my own frustration of walking the same neighborhood loops and wanting to discover new streets without getting lost. Every walk should feel like a mini adventure, and that's exactly what I've built. Excited to hear which routes become your favorites!

Any plans for Android users too? :)

Hi@busmark_w_nika,

I've been an iOS developer for 7 years and I've zero knowledge in Android development. I'm afraid there won't be Android version of this app :/

Vitaliy Mokosiy

@emrdgrmnci If you ever want to make an Android version, Flutter might be a good option. With Flutter, you keep a single set of code for iOS and Android. Its declarative UI is similar to SwiftUI.

If you don't want to rewrite iOS part into Flutter, go Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP). The learning curve is somewhat steeper yet low enough. Kotlin and Swift are close to siblings as programming languages. It means you can write the business logic in Kotlin. For theUI, you can either make it shared as well (using Compose) or keep it native (SwiftUI for iOS, Compose for Android).

Hi @mokosiy , I know those technologies that can be use for Android version but my concern is Google Maps pricing can be expensive for apps that generate routes frequently. Since Google Maps is more performant and accurate on map apps I'd prefer it over other options when it comes accuracy and performance. Anyway, I’m planning to develop an Android version.

I did some quick research using Claude and it validated me by;

Google Maps Pricing Reality

Google Maps APIs charge per request:

  • Directions API: ~$5 per 1,000 requests

  • Routes API: ~$10 per 1,000 requests

  • You get $200/month free credit (covers ~40,000 basic direction requests)

For a walking route app that generates daily routes for users, costs can add up quickly if you have many active users.

Better Alternatives for Google Maps

1. OpenStreetMap (OSM) - FREE

  • Completely free and open-source

  • Libraries like Graphhopper or OSRM for routing

  • MapLibre for map display

  • No usage limits, no API keys needed

  • Quality is excellent in most regions

2. Mapbox

  • More generous free tier than Google (50,000 free requests/month)

  • Better pricing after that (~$4 per 1,000 requests)

  • Beautiful maps and good Android SDK

  • Popular choice for indie developers

3. HERE Maps

  • Competitive pricing

  • Good free tier for small apps

  • Enterprise-focused but accessible

@emrdgrmnci I would go for MapBox in the first place. Don't know why, it's just my gut feeling 🙂

How does Walk Mate plan to integrate community features or social sharing options to enhance. user engagement and facilitate group walking initiatives?

Hi @liulixin ,

Great question! Walk Mate currently supports route sharing where you can generate beautiful route images and share them across social platforms. For community features, I'm exploring exciting possibilities like:

  • Create walking challenges with friends and family

  • Share and discover popular routes from other users in your area

  • Show off your medals and milestones with the community

These features are on my roadmap as I continue to build Walk Mate into a more social experience.

Thanks for the feedback! It helps me prioritize what matters most to our users!

Finally something for walkers, not splits. I get stuck on the same loop with my dog. Fresh circular routes + time-of-day safety sounds right. Curious how fast it learns my vibe after a few days. Gonna try it on tonight’s wander.

@alexcloudstar so glad to hear that! Please let me know after wander!

Sounds really useful, I'd love to see the ability to see more metrics about the walk, such as how much is on road vs green space.

Hi @henry_adams5 ,

Currently, Walk Mate tracks distance, duration, completion rates, and medal collection, but as a solo iOS developer who works on this project I'm working on adding more detailed route analytics including urban exploration vs green space vs park paths.

This data would help you choose routes that match your preferences whether you want a peaceful park walk or an urban exploration.

It's definitely on my development list!

Really like the mini adventure angle, makes walking feel a lot more intentional. The safety-aware routing is a nice touch too. Looking forward to testing it out!

Harvey

nice! I need this app!
