To tell the truth I don't like it. And what I don't like more - is that it was so easy to create this kind of tool.

Hi everyone! Last week Facebook released a feature that allows users to unsend messages in Messenger. Since the user has 10 minutes to delete the message, I wanted to see if it was possible to intercept the messages before they got deleted so I can read them even after they were removed from my chat. I started to reverse engineer the React components for the removed messages, similarly to what I did for my Forever Thankful on FB extension, and I ended up building Unsend Recall for Messenger, a Chrome extension that shows you the contents of removed Facebook messages. Once you install Unsend Recall for Messenger, new messages you receive that are removed will display the message's original text.* * You must have had either Facebook.com or Messenger.com open in a tab when you received the message that was removed or else it won't work. * You won't be able to see the contents of messages previously removed before you installed this extension. How does this extension work? Simply put, it intercepts new messages you receive and saves them to your browser’s local storage. If someone removes their message, the extension will retrieve it from local storage and displays it as if it was never removed in the first place. Facebook/Messenger needs to be open in a tab at all times so the extension can listen for new messages and store them for later in case the message is removed from your chat and needs to be recovered. Your messages stay locally on your device and are never transmitted to a server. Check out my Medium article that explains the reverse engineering process and how it works: https://medium.com/@calialec/uns... This should be a violation of Facebook's platform terms of service.

Pros:

Seems to only store data locally

Cons:

Subverting someone's desire to unsend a message does not make the world a better place

I can recommend another tool. I'm using a browser extension cucomm. It automatically sends messages to users on Facebook and saves me time.
