This book is a fantastic read; I picked it up at a library years ago and I couldn't put it down. Even if you're not a comic book reader, there's tons to learn in Scott's book about the fascinating art of comics.

Downright seminal work on understanding comics. Even if you're not new to the medium, I highly recommend it.

Understanding Comics is a groundbreaking work in anglophone comics studies, not only for the fact that it's a comic itself. Other comics theorists, particularly in France, have gone and built on (and sometimes knocked down) McCloud's work, but UC remains an absolute must-read for anyone even slightly interested in comics and visual narrative.
