How does the route planning / carbon offsetting work?
Nick Wilkins
@freddieethan Thanks for your question and interest in Travlee! The route planning works like any standard app out there, Google Maps and so on, giving you a selection of routes that are available from a location to another The carbon calculation is done by taking the different modes of transport for the route and using an average carbon emissions per mile and combining these values together And the offsetting side of it is done by planting trees using local conservation projects around the UK, 100% of the money spent purchasing trees goes to these organisations

Hello and congratulations for this great idea. I see that the application is only available for the UK. Is it planned a declination for Europe, precisely France where I live. Thank you and I hope that it will follow for you, because the idea and the project are excellent. See you soon. Bader
Nick Wilkins
@bader_bouanani Hey Bader Thanks for your interest in Travlee! And yes we would love to expand out into Europe and other places around the world in the future :)

Hello Product Hunt! Happy Earth day everyone! We would like to celebrate our amazing planet by allowing people to plan more environmentally friendly journeys and by planting the trees we need so many more of in the UK :) Travlee was born from working from home this past year like so many of us have done. I really liked the idea that I was having far less of an impact on the planet by not having to commute 60 miles every day in my car, and I wanted to find a way to make positive, practical change even when we're back to 'normal'... So this formed the idea of this app; allowing the easy planning of journeys and a real, tangible way to do something about the carbon emissions each trip generates. I did some research around the state of forests in the UK and found out that only 14% of land is woodland with an even smaller number of this being natural, most of it is working forest for logging. The more people I spoke to, the more I realised that we're shocked by this and that we care, but don't know how to help. That's when the magic happened and we partnered with projects round the UK who are working to create UK woodland and plant the trees we need. If you have Travlee and you offset the emissions of your daily commute or one-off journey, whether that's car, train or ferry(!), your funds will go into UK based conservation projects and have the power to make a huge difference, you could even visit the forest you've created in years to come. And so Travlee was born, and with it's release today I hope it can go some way to helping the state of woodlands, not only in this country but hopefully around the world in the future. The app is only released in the UK for now but with enough interest we'll look at expanding to different countries as it grows Happy travels :)

Are the calculations done based only miles traveled? Also your revenue model is only via the admin fee? Also wondering with move towards electric and solar, our carbon footprint (probably even today) is way more because of things outside of travel? How do you see this holistically?
Nick Wilkins
@shachinb - carbon emissions generated are calculated by the distance of the journey and the different modes that are used i.e. car / train / bus etc. Yes the admin fee is our revenue model, and I agree that the carbon footprint of most people is growing and would love to expand Travlee in the future to support different means of informing and allowing the offsetting of emissions produced in different aspects of our lives!
