If you haven't read The Iliad (http://www.producthunt.com/books...) before, I would consider doing that first. It's not necessary, but chronologically that book tells the story before the Odyssey.
This book has a non-linear plot telling an epic 20 year tale. I was able to go to Greece after reading this book and was great to see how the geography has changed (or stayed the same!).
