Astra significantly expanded what I thought I could realistically build as an independent developer. Slurp started as a focused native Mac video downloader, but I was able to push it much further: multiple fallback paths for media discovery, live-stream recording, browser companions, independently updated compatibility rules, automatic app updates, diagnostics, and the surrounding website and launch infrastructure. It also let me iterate much faster on difficult edge cases instead of avoiding them because they would take too long to investigate. The biggest change was ambition: I stopped thinking in terms of “what can I reasonably implement alone?” and started designing the product I actually wanted Slurp to become.

I built Slurp because downloading video on a Mac often felt more complicated than it should. I wanted something where you could paste a link, choose what you want, and move on — without managing command-line tools, dependencies, browser cookies, or site-specific workarounds. What started as a simple downloader gradually became much more ambitious. Slurp now uses several ways to find media: source-specific extraction, alternate verified engines, page and embedded-player discovery, direct video and stream detection, and browser assistance when a site needs an active session. One of the ideas I care about most is that a broken extractor shouldn’t automatically mean a dead end. Slurp can often find another path. I also wanted it to feel like a proper Mac app: native UI, queues, history, subtitles, live recording, automatic updates, and no behavioural telemetry. I’m still actively improving compatibility and polishing the experience, so I’d genuinely love to hear what sites you try, where Slurp works well, and where it doesn’t yet.
