ScreenHint

Always-visible Snapshots

Instead of juggling multiple apps and tabs, ScreenHint lets you capture a piece of your screen, turning it in to a snapshot that hovers over your other windows. It can help you keep focused, remember something important, or stay inspired while you work.

Years ago, a classmate noticed me struggling to juggle multiple windows. He introduced me to SnappyApp, a game-changer that kept screenshots pinned above everything else. Little did I know, this would spark a productivity revolution. I thanked him. His name was Salem, and we became good friends. Fast forward to OSX 11, and disaster struck. SnappyApp stopped working, and their support team was nowhere to be found. The community scrambled to find a replacement. Then, out of the blue, ScreenHint appeared—open-source software that just worked. It kept my screenshots visible over all my other windows. I could once again keep my design references on screen while writing code, so I wouldn’t have to keep switching windows to remember what I was doing. We all breathed a sigh of relief. Years passed, and one day, out of curiosity, I clicked "About ScreenHint." To my surprise, I saw "Copyright 2021 Salem Hilal." It was my friend Salem again! We reconnected, and I thanked him for giving the world this incredible tool, for free. I've saved countless hours with ScreenHint, and I hope you will too.

Hey everyone! Honestly never thought I'd have something on ProductHunt. When Abhi reached out to me to announce ScreenHint here, it kinda took me by surprise, but it feels like such an obvious thing in hindsight. Over the past few years, I've gotten lots of great feedback from all sorts of folks — students, professors, engineers, even doctors. If you use it and get something out of it, drop me a line. I build ScreenHint because I need it, and seeing others get value out of it has been a great motivator.

This is a great story! It's amazing how a little tool like ScreenHint can bring back so much productivity. Huge shoutout to Salem for not just being a lifesaver back then, but also for creating such a useful open-source gem! The power of community and friendship really shines here. I can’t wait to give it a try and upvote it! It seems like a perfect MVP for anyone juggling too many tabs. Here’s to more focused work sessions! 💪

Hey Abhishek, How customizable are the snapshots? Can they be resized or edited once they’re pinned? Congrats on the launch!
Abhishek Chadha
@kyrylosilin yeah you can resize the snapshots, move them around and toggle the border.

ScreenHint is exactly what I didn't know I needed! Keeping crucial information visible without switching windows is a fantastic productivity hack. Big thanks for this innovation. I'm wondering, does ScreenHint offer any keyboard shortcuts for quick snapshot capture and management?
Abhishek Chadha
@renchu_song yeah you can set up a keyboard shortcut in the settings - I use cmd + shift + h

Team 100 tabs opened and struggling heeeere 👋 That's such a great idea guys! I'm always looking to more ways to increase my productivity. I think I'm in the right place! Will definitely try ScreenHint! Best of luck for your launch 🔥

So we're supposed to believe hovering screenshots are the future, right? I mean, do we really need another thing cluttering our screens while we work, when half the time we're already drowning in open tabs, just saying, maybe focus more on streamlining our workflow than adding another layer of chaos 🧐
Salem Hilal
@conversationalalchemist Hey! I built ScreenHint because it personally helps me to unclutter my workflow — keeping a window open just to see a snippet of code just eats up screen real-estate. It may not be the right tool for you! I don't think it's a great fit for everyone, but I don't think I could live without it.
