Rover is great. We (@500startups) were excited to work with them because deploying iBeacons is the easy part. Once that's done, you need to manage the infrastructure, collect the right data, and then utilize this data to make apps deliver real value and not just a spammy coupon at the front door. This will be hard for retailers to do well themselves, and we think Rover is an impactful and simple solution for them. If you know any retailers looking to take advantage of iBeacon, send them Rover's/my way.

@pt Well put Parker. At Rover we focus on customer experience more than marketing. iBeacons enable apps to be contextually aware at the micro level. This is a dangerous concept that is ripe for abuse. Shopkick have been in this space for a long time, how does this differentiate? Is there a difference in the hardward used, both seem to output bluetooth .... also how are retailers finding the ROI per store, are users re opening the app habitually?

@acondurache Great question. The primary difference between us and ShopKick is that ShopKick *is* an app and we are a platform that integrates into a retailer's *existing* app. We deliver a similar ShopKick experience but allow the retailer to own the branding of that experience. Large retailer's have spent 6-7 figures on developing their mobile apps and to date they provide almost no value to customers when they are in the store. Most of them are little more than a store finder and another interface to their e-commerce offering. The ShopKick model undermines the retailers' own mobile app and steals the in-store experience. Rover's iBeacon platform helps retailers deliver a better customer experience by transforming their mobile apps into in-store shopping companions. Rewarding customers for visiting and helping them make purchase decisions is a high value customer engagement and retailers' should own that. On the hardware side, ShopKick has developed their own beacon technology that uses audio signals to determine a customer is in store. Their beacons emit a high frequency sound that is inaudible to a human ear but can be detected by an app. The major downside to ShopKick's beacons is that the app must be open in order to detect them. Rover uses iBeacons which the phone can detect even when asleep in your pocket.
