Private Document Chat

Chat with your documents, fully offline

Private Document Chat is an application that lets you ask questions across your own documents while keeping all data local. You load documents such as policies, contracts, or questionnaires and ask questions in plain English. All processing happens on your own computer. It’s designed for working with sensitive documents where uploading files to external services isn’t appropriate. This is the first public release, we’re interested in feedback around usability and real-world use cases.

What do you think? …

Russell Charman
It’s incredible how quickly generative AI tools have gone from a novelty to something people rely on for everyday tasks. You’ve got a document, you want an answer, so you paste it into ChatGPT and ask a question. It’s convenient, it works, and most of the time you don’t really think about it. What’s less clear is what actually happens to that data once it’s gone - where it ends up, how long it’s kept, or what it might be used for later. It would be useful to be able to do this with sensitive data without having to worry about that. I found a few tools that could help, but they were either expensive or required setting up and tuning models. So I built a simple app to do exactly that: Private Document Chat.
