I built PingPatrol after too many late night pages began with the same question; is it us or is a provider wobbling; we bounced across status pages while dashboards yelled and lost the first crucial minutes..
The problem to solve was simple; cut triage to ten seconds; one panel in the browser that fuses provider feeds with few local probes; then a plain english brief with what broke; where; likely blast radius; and official links so the team can act!
The approach evolved step by step; v0 was a handful list of status links; v0.2 pulled official RSS and API feeds; v0.3 added HTTP TLS & ICMP global probes from a couple regions plus a confidence score; v0.4 layered a small summarizer and a slack webhook so the first responder isn’t the human router! and the latest v0.8 released with AI NLP query for recent outages queried for all major providers monitored!
I killed anything that added noise; tuned for degraded vs major; cached hard; and kept privacy boring and clear; no browsing history collected!
The goal stayed the same throughout; help on call folks move from alarm to action with less guessing!
