Hey Everyone! Nick Frost, Alex Shye, Ben Tossel, and myself are excited to introduce a side project: On Deck Daily. On Deck Daily (V.01) is a community of engineers, founders, investors, and startup folks of all stripes discussing and debating the latest in technology. On Deck Daily grew out of the On Deck community — a digital and in-person community of world-class engineers and entrepreneurs looking to start or join their next thing. We were having great conversations in Slack, Facebook, and in person, and we wanted to give them their own home. Also: Nick Frost is really good at curating insightful content, and our goal is to build a great community around knowledge sharing the way Product Hunt built a great community around product launches. Of course, we’re inspired by Reddit, HN, and Product Hunt. (UI is very similar to PH early days-- Ryan's work with PH has been seminal.) To answer the obvious question: Does the world *need* another Hacker News, Reddit, or news-like site? Probably not. But we enjoy building communities, curating good content, and facilitating conversations between smart people — so join us if that speaks to you too. :-) We’re doing things slightly differently: to keep quality high, we’ve seeded the community with 1,000 posters a.k.a curators (thanks Allison Esposito and Ruben Harris for the help!), but we’re giving anyone who signs up the ability to comment, day one, barring they follow the community code of conduct. We’re also aiming to get the writers (“creators”) of these posts and articles in the conversations. Often these conversations get lost in the Twittersphere (or never happen due to character limits), so we hope On Deck Daily becomes a place where you go to find substantive conversations in one place. Some of the ways we're measuring success of this experiment: 1) Can we bring authors and relevant experts into the conversations? 2) Can we have substantive conversations that you wouldn't find in, say, Twitter or Medium? 3) Will we have substantive conversations about breaking topics, and what kind of topics (blog post vs news, etc) Please let us know what you think!

@eriktorenberg Just curious, When you know you don't need another Hacker News then why create it? Are there not enough smart discussions happening? P.S I have already joined On Deck Daily. ;)
Seth Louey
@eriktorenberg looks like a great way to get some awesome conversations started around micro topics.
Erik Torenberg
@rafyasarmatta It's a good question. The short answer is because we wanted to. It's a fun side project we built in a weekend. Thought experiment: Does the world *need* people to make more songs, films, magazines, etc? Probably not. And yet, I don't think we'd question why they create if it brings them joy.
Erik Torenberg
@sethlouey great point. Thx Seth!
Mohammed Rafy
@eriktorenberg Make sense. Also, On Deck Daily will be a great place for people who cannot invest their time reading on Hacker News & Reddit because of the frequency those platforms have with posts, comments, etc. Instead, use ODD & invest time carefully on what they want to read & know about to keep up with all latest happenings around technologies with minimum effort & time. I hope what I said make sense. Love it. :)
Nick Frost
Hey everyone! As a curator of content for the past 6 years, most recently as the Mattermark Daily Newsletter Editor, I believe that this is the next level of how we can collectively contribute to a high-quality feed of content and individually engage in a community around the latest in technology topics. We hope you enjoy what we’ve put together and look forward to your posts and comments!
Marc Baiges Camprubí
Hey @thinker, a very interesting list of topics indeed... One question, though: why do you request write access to Twitter accounts on sign up? I think readonly mode should be enough for a sign up scenario.
Steven Rueter
It's like TechCrunch and Product Hunt had a baby 🍼
Marc Baiges Camprubí
@bentossell I now see in the comment box you can directly publish to Twitter. I would have taken another approach to avoid turning down users concerned with privacy issues, but I see your point.
Andreea Nastase
@thinker I, for one, welcome another community to talk about developments in tech. The more, and more diverse, the merrier. For me, some of the more popular ones are too big to keep up with, or have specific cultural nuances or predilections due to the type audiences they attracted over time. The others formed around newsletters/websites and on Twitter were like too much of a 'back channel' that not so many had access to. Good luck with herding the community in the right direction! In terms of wishful thinking (though you may not even have plans for this), it'd be awesome to be able to follow the activity of certain users, have friends on there and be alerted to what they upvote or comment on, or to somehow find interesting people and contact them on the platform itself instead of going through Twitter.
Nick Frost
@diemkay Thanks for your comment and feedback! We agree that it'd be great to follow people and specific topics in the future. In time, we'll be adding new features and try to make it as valuable and engaging as possible.
Alex Shye
A little backstory: @thinker, @bentossell, and @eriktorenberg all passionate about news, curation, community, startups, etc. After a couple jamming sessions, it just became obvious that we had to build something. As Erik mentioned, this doesn't necessarily _have_ to exist, but why not? After a few days of hacking away at this, On Deck News was born. We think it can be yet another one of those great places where awesome people congregate to discuss interesting topics online ;) Super stoked to be launching today, and hope y'alll enjoy it!

@thinker @bentossell @eriktorenberg @alexshye I love this team, go go go!

@thinker @bentossell @eriktorenberg @alexshye Awesome work guys. Checking it out!

It's curious to see this launch (congrats!) Just as @sandimac's Quibb is shutting down. Thoughts? https://medium.com/@sandimac/far...
Chris Messina
Erik Torenberg
@chrismessina Quibb is a pioneer when it comes to authentic community building. We all look up to Sandi.
Chris Messina
@eriktorenberg :) Is there a [different] business model here? I'm primarily interested in your thoughts about where this goes from a monetization perspective, if you're thinking about that yet. Oftentimes it's about building community momentum and monetization comes later, but in light of Quibb's efforts, I'm just wondering if you're thinking about things substantially differently in terms of the longer term aspirations.

The 'curation' is the easier part, and I am excited to see the engagement windows. It will be interesting to see how you handle "content governance" when it grows - for what to filter. I have been curating content for a while now (launched ContentHug in 2015, closed last year as we struggled with part governance and part scaling), and I curate via Revue even now (example: https://www.getrevue.co/profile/...). So, I know the pains of "governance" or curated content!
Erik Torenberg
@vingar Totally. Governance is always a tough part of any community, especially as it scales. Did you write anywhere your lessons from the experience? Could be a good post. :-)
Vinish Garg
@eriktorenberg I shared why we closed ContentHug, though not from "governance" perspective. https://medium.com/you-too/conte... I remember Ev Williams talking about Medium's evolving model and I raised the same point there as a comment, https://blog.medium.com/renewing...
Dainis Kanopa
is it alternative to YC's Hacker News?
Dainis Kanopa
Okay , I replied myself after reading full post! :D
Erik Torenberg
@dainiskanopa Not an alternative. You should read both!
Mohammed Rafy
@dainiskanopa Right. :)
Yam Regev
What a winning team of ace players <3 On Deck Daily feels very much like https://www.designernews.co/ which I personally love! I wonder how do you guys plan to nurture users so they will come back to the platform and how you are going to control it so it will not become another manipulatable vote-based platform? Will be SO COOL to see this platform grow and become the most prominent place of all Entrepreneurs to come and discuss issues that close to their hearts. A million tons of luck, guys.
Erik Torenberg
@yam_regev Thank you! We are definitely inspired by designernews too. Those are very good questions. Let me just say that the short answer is AI + Machine Learning + ICOs. Just kidding. We've thought about them but don't have anything definitive. Do you have any ideas? :-)
Leslie Wu
@yam_regev @eriktorenberg I have some new ideas after watching all the news media drama unfold 🤓 and leveling up my knowledge of modern+old school AI. Ask me sometime XD
