Merlin is built by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology & makes it super easy to identify over 400 North American bird species. It's way handier than an old school field guide because it asks a few simple questions on size, color, etc and then actually uses a database of current bird sightings to figure out which bird you were most likely to have seen based on date & location. Makes it really easy for newbies like me to figure out what they saw based on data from more experienced bird watchers. This morning I spotted a Grey Catbird! One downside is the app is quite large - over 600mb on Android. It's nice that it will function offline with photos, bird calls etc if I'm out in the woods with no service but I do think it could be optimized better.

Oh my gosh, this is so exciting! I'm forever caught without my guidebooks when out on trails and I've been desperate for a good app to help identify the birds I see. Downloading now!
