What inspired this? 50 million Americans live with chronic pain. Back pain alone is the #1 cause of disability worldwide. We kept seeing the same story: people waiting weeks for PT appointments they couldn't afford ($150-250/session), or downloading apps that felt like doing exercises alone in a void. The dropout rates were brutal. When we discovered Dr. Sheila Nirenberg's Neural Code AI research (MacArthur Genius Award winner), we saw the opportunity: technology that could analyze human movement using just a smartphone camera. No wearables, no sensors, no friction. The problem we're solving: Most digital MSK apps treat symptoms without understanding why you're in pain. We wanted to identify root-cause movement patterns, the actual dysfunction behind your pain, then guide you through fixing it. All from your phone, at a price anyone can afford. How our approach evolved: Our biggest shift came when we realized technology alone wasn't enough. Digital PT apps have notoriously high dropout rates. People sign up but never stick with it. The exercises weren't the problem. The experience was. Impersonal apps don't build habits. So we created Flexa as a character, an empathetic AI coach who knows your name, remembers your journey, and adapts when you're struggling. She guides sessions by voice so you can focus on your movement, not your screen. That shift from "app" to "companion" changed everything. Turns out, people don't abandon someone who shows up for them every day.
