I built Meet Default Off because I kept getting embarrassed in online meetings.
Like many developers, I join tons of calls, sometimes with coworkers, sometimes with clients, sometimes with people I don’t even know yet. And half the time, at the moment I join, I’m not ready to talk. Maybe I’m finishing a thought, maybe I’m eating, maybe I’m just not in “camera mode” yet.
But Google Meet loves turning the mic and camera ON by default. And that awkward 2–3 seconds of scrambling to turn everything off? Yeah… I hated that.
So I made a tiny tool for myself: always join muted, always join with camera off. No surprises. No stress.
That’s when I realized this wasn’t just my problem. A lot of us join calls just to listen, observe, follow up later, or speak once at the end. Not everyone wants their face and background broadcast the second they enter the room.
So this small personal fix became a proper extension. Simple, friendly, reliable. It lets you join meetings the way YOU want, not the way Google forces you.
Excited to share it with Product Hunt today. Feedback is always welcome!
