@levelsio is this what you use to keep track of the people that are above you so that you know how many more products you have to ship to overtake them? :D are these info all available through the PH API, or you scraped them?
levelsio
@sliver86 Haha, well I just built it but yes that's a good idea. I'm in a long competition with Mubashar Iqbal, but we both have to win from the most prolific shipper ever Clark from Invision. This is mixed data from different APIs including mostly Product Hunt, Twitter and Crunchbase. I'm adding data like revenue later too!
Pierre Vannier
Very cool! You could add a live search in the search bar? That would make it perfect.
levelsio
@pierre_vannier Yes, added now! Does it work?
Enrique Benitez
@pierre_vannier @levelsio how does the data went in there? manually? apis? 🤔 cool resource +1 👍
Pierre Vannier
@levelsio cool, a bit laggy?
levelsio
@pierre_vannier Added DB indexes now for faster speed
levelsio
@pierre_vannier @bntzio It's Product Hunt, Crunchbase, Twitter and /open data mixed. I'll be adding more datasets if I come up with them

I’d say to aspire to be on this list one should be optimising for more than only vanity units like producthunt votes and twitter followers. Difference or impact made is ideally what you’d want to measure, whether that’s total user count, downloads, revenue, blog page views, YouTube watches, number of book readers, speaking gigs, etc. Total staff count also important as a positive and deduction. I.e. creating jobs is good, but also how much impact has been made divided by total staff across all products. Also be useful to understand criteria and a definition of a maker. There’s quite a few startup entrepreneurs in this list as well as indie makers. Is it just someone who’s launched something on producthunt?
levelsio
@iamfledge Absolutely, lists like these are superficial and vain, so I had some first doubts to even build this product. But then I thought again, lists like these do make people competitive, and competition motivates people. If you get more makers competing for top spots, you theoretically get a bigger maker scene, with more revenue and exposure. That's my motivation to build this.
Edward Woodcock
@levelsio I think that's a fantastic incentive. And if this does indeed motivate people into action, I'd say all the more important to drive people into meaningful metrics. Ultimately it'd be a very powerful goal to have a rapidly growing maker scene who are collectively making a huge positive impact, than just another variant of instagram where people are optimising for popularity. Yes, of course, like with Instagram, popularity can mean more revenue, it's a facet of marketing after all... but should Instagram really be the guiding light to strive for on world-impact?
Edward Woodcock
@levelsio Btw, I'm not slating this; I genuinely think this is a great idea, and I get that you've quickly thrown this up with the most accessible data available. And it has indeed already made me want to boost my own ranking, but at the moment, the actions I should take to do that don't quite feel right. Longer term with the right metrics for ranking this could be so powerful.
Edward Woodcock
@levelsio In the meantime with what you've got btw, a useful feature would be to auto-construct on your own Twitter account (or a Makerrank one), a public list that other people can subscribe to based on some criteria (e.g. top 100 makers).
Tomasz Stefaniak
Nice! Can you add Twitter profile links so I can use it as a tool to find people to follow?
levelsio
@tomasz_fm Added!
Tomasz Stefaniak
@levelsio awesome, thanks!
Max
I’m not on the list, booo, downvote Just kidding. Awesome resource 🙌🏻
levelsio
@rdev Fixed! Now made it searchable on back end too so you should be found
