I have not read this book yet, but Lillian's life sounds very interesting. The daughter of jewish intellectuals that immigrated to New York in the early 1900s, she grew up in the heart of some of the creative centers in New York City.
She was a fashion photographer at Harper's Bazaar (and Junior Harper's Bazaar) - one of the greats. After 20 years there (1950s and 1960s) she decided to give it all up. She literally threw away all of her life's work to that point. Years later some of the negatives were found, but for the most part she destroyed all of her work so that she could progress her artistic work.
