I'd love it if this was available in the UK, but it doesn't look like it :(

@riaface Thanks for your support! Yes, as a Seattle based startup, we are razor focused on successfully launching in the USA, however we are looking at international markets for 2015. Stay tuned!

@daviddonovick Thanks David - I'd love a heads up when you go global!

Interesting business model flip. Only thing I wonder about is how you can get a hardware upgrade when they launch the Life Tracker 2?
David DonovickMaker@daviddonovick · CEO/Founder, Pivot.al
@bramk Great question. We believe in a world where hardware across of all form factors and verticals may be free or low cost, with rich software and services providing value to users on those devices. Not too different from the telco model, each annual membership to Pivotal Living will include a complimentary device and our members will be allowed to renew for another 12 months at anytime, whether that be if they lose their device or we release another (new) model.

@daviddonovick @bramk thanks for the answer! Love the telco model for a hardware startup, curious to see how that works out. Too bad you only ship in the US. Maybe I can get one when I'm there in March ;)

I assume the rub with this is selling aggregate fitness data...
David DonovickMaker@daviddonovick · CEO/Founder, Pivot.al
@JadoJodo Simply put, we are not in the business of selling ads. It clutters the user experience and design elements. I don't like them any more than you do. We also do not have plans to sell our members data to 3rd party companies. As you might have seen in Geekwire (http://www.geekwire.com/2014/piv...), which explains a little bit more about our company and vision, we are more focused on using de-identified/anonymized data for health and wellness research breakthroughs, providing our members with more personalized algorithmic based coaching, and other premium features which will be possible as we expand beyond the "bread and butter basics" of the Life Tracker 1. It personally excites me to think about the possibility of a near future where we can move from reactive detection monitoring to using technology for preventive interventions... which saves lives, health care costs for our members, and fast tracks the quantified self movement. These goals may seem lofty, but we are not some pump and dump scheme. Rather, we are committed to the long haul and we plan to share more information as we formally launch in the next couple weeks.

I'm assuming the the tracker works only with the app and the data is locked within the app? Curious what the rationale is when you larger OEMs like Xaomi manufacturing 12$ trackers with free software. Regardless it's an interesting biz model.

@arjunram Hi Arjun. Pivotal Living is a closed ecosystem for a couple of reasons... 1) Knowing that many people have criticized fitness trackers as less accurate (since most use simple accelerometers), the Pivotal Living app also uses software algorithms to calibrate activity data from the phone with data from the band to get our members more accurate health and wellness reporting, “under the hood” software magic which is critical to providing a more clear data picture and wouldn't be possible if we integrated with 3rd party apps. 2) Also, certain apps (like HealthKit) do not run on iPad, a compromise which limits the flexibility of how our members access the Pivotal Living app and its rich analytics. Xaomi's model is very different than ours in so much that their device only works with their phones (ours works with both iOS and Android phones, agnostic of manufacturer). Also, it serves as sales incentive or value prop incentive to purchase their phones... which is their underlying business. Hope these clarifications help!

@daviddonovick As long as you and the users believe this is a big difference then it sure does.
alonnir@alonnir · That's me!
@daviddonovick how long on average does it take for people to stop wearing quantified-self devices and stop tracking their activity? I just ordered a jawbone up24 myself and definitely doubt I'll use it a year after I get it :) In other words, aren't you afraid the $12/yr won't cover the costs of manufacturing and of course overhead? Would you mind sharing if the production cost of 1 unit + S&H is > or < the annual subscription fee? It's not like a printer where you just have it there, use on demand and buy ink when needed. This requires more 24hr 'burden' or 'involvement'. Also, at $12, it looks too good to be true :) Good luck!

@alonnir @daviddonovick Great question. Did you see this article from the Guardian? http://www.theguardian.com/techn... Basically, this articles research confirms your point... on average, 1/3 of Americans who purchase fitness trackers abandon them after 6 months. Pivotal is hoping for a different outcome. Specifically, research has also shown that when people initiate a membership, they are more likely to stay committed… so what better than to commit $12/year (or the equivalent three grande lattes) towards a healthy conscious lifestyle and toolset! We also don’t believe in transactional relationships and are trying to build a community of likeminded individuals committed to a healthier future. Think Crossfit style community meets tech! Our membership price includes both access to our app and the Life Tracker 1 band. Pivotal Living provides invaluable tools for creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and we feel the membership model is the best way to offer this service. Hope to see you in our community!
