Why do 200+ families trust Komal? Children are growing up with AI, algorithmic feeds, and immersive digital lives without any guidance. Current tools are static, binary, and increase caregiver-child mistrust, while only 1 mental health professional exists for every 3.3k children in the US. To move beyond blocking to behavior-guided browsing, parents needed infrastructure that spans entire digital journeys. Komal is the adaptive safety layer for K-12 users of AI and the Internet. Our AI behavioral infrastructure enables online self-regulation by giving children age-appropriate, mindful freedom online and parents psychology-backed insights and granular control. --- We realized how many parents wanted a "kids mode" for popular tools like ChatGPT, since monitoring children over the same account meant messing up their context windows. Moreover, market research showed that while Instagram and YouTube are the most popular digital media for K-12, a significant majority spend time open browsing. While existing tools block inappropriate content, they cannot filter nuanced topics such as parasocial or manipulative media, polarizing posts, etc. Based on decades of child psychology research, especially at Yale, we introduced gating: wherein only educational links are shown, while hiding unsafe ones. Real-time intent and emotions are proxied using non-intrusive emoji checks at the beginning and every 5-6 links. This information is used to provide conversation starters for families to discuss online exposure and access. All of this is mediated through child-friendly avatars as opposed to authority figures like psychologists, reducing the child's psychological reactance. Based on robotic therapy and digital puppetry (shown to work for neurodiverse kids), we introduced daily 15-min SEL/mindfulness sessions with the avatar. This is done fully hands-free, voice-first, and without any dark patterns like streaks or scores. Parents get developmental milestone reports across 5 domains based on 300+ parameters tracked during the sessions, from eye tracking to voice monitoring (under development).
