Kolu

Tailored city tours from guides matched to your interests

#5 Product of the DayJanuary 27, 2018

Kolu is a mobile app that matches travelers with their own local tour guide based on shared interests. When traveling to a new city, users can view profiles of local guides in that area who not only share their interests, but who are also close in age, speak the same language, and more. Kolu tours are always custom to the traveler's interests.

Reviews

  • Pros:

Travelers- experience a city like you never have before with knowledge and comfort of a local guide

    Cons:

    Coming soon to more cities!

You are only matched with guides who share similar travel interests and are in the same age range. Tours are easy on the wallet for travelers looking to experience a city beyond the tourist traps.

@ayush_chandra Thanks! Currently we are launched in New York City only and we'll be rolling out service city by city in the future.

I love this space in general, @em_johnson ... however, how do you solve supply and demand at the same time? Are you only focused on a few select cities, and only a few select types of guides? It seems a distribution deal with Lyft or Uber would be by far the best way to reach travelers in a new city cost effectively. I've built a few travel apps with the goal of connecting like-minded people in person. Happy to chat if you'd like.

@drewmeyers Great question. Currently we're only based in New York City and we will be scaling at a city-by-city basis to ensure that we can offer a wide enough selection of guides to meet many traveler interest types. We focus on acquiring the guides first and then building up the awareness on the traveler side second. A deal with Uber or Lyft is a great idea and one that we would love to do in the future. 🙂 I'd also be happy to chat and hear your insights to this space in your ventures!

@em_johnson What's working in terms of traveler/demand side paying real dollars? What's driving enough urgency for that? I have to imagine it's some very specific use cases? Shoot me a note - drew at horizonapp.co
