What do you think? …

Steve Means

I kept running into the same problem over and over again:

I just wanted to ask a small group of people a clear question and get a clean answer back.

Not a 20 page survey. Not a giant NPS program. Just things like:

  • Which version of this pricing page feels clearer?

  • Which feature should we ship next?

  • Which headline would make you more likely to click?

  • Do you understand what this product actually does?

Every time I tried to do this, I hit the same friction:

  • Survey tools felt like they were built for enterprise research, not quick checks.

  • Embeddable widgets looked out of place or slowed the page down.

  • Rolling my own polls in the app always turned into more work than I expected.

So I decided to build something that solved my own pain: a very small, focused polling tool where the goal is basically:

"Create a poll in a few minutes, share it anywhere, and get results that are easy to trust."

The constraints I gave myself:

  • It had to be fast to set up (title, a few options, go live).

  • It had to be easy to share (clean link and a tiny embeddable widget).

  • It had to be simple to read (per question breakdown, top choices obvious at a glance).

  • It had to stay out of the way of the rest of the product.

Right now it lets you:

  • Build short polls with single choice / multiple choice questions (plus optional free text).

  • Share a hosted link, or drop a small JS snippet on specific pages or paths.

  • See responses and completion rates without exporting anything to another tool.

  • Optionally generate a first draft of your poll with AI and then tweak it.

I am obviously biased, because this is my own project, but I am curious how others here handle this problem:

  • How do you collect quick, structured feedback from users without going full “research platform”?

  • Do you embed polls in your product, or do you always send people to an external page?

  • What is the minimum you need to see in a results view before you feel comfortable acting on it?

If you are interested in trying it, the project is called Indie Polls. You can see a live example here:

But I am mainly posting to get feedback from other founders and devs on:

  • Whether this is actually a real pain you feel too.

  • What you think is missing or overkill in this kind of tool.

Happy to answer questions or share more details if anyone is curious about the tech side or the product decisions.
