How To Speak Canadian

A Chrome Extension for newcomers to Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

Yonge Street is the longest street in North America. But how do you say it? Is it Yonjee or Yongay? Neither, it's Young. Also, Quay is pronounced Key. There are dozens of words like this.

I can't be the only one struggling with this, so I created this little chrome extension for newcomers, visitors, immigrants and aspiring immigrants to Canada.

Hey Product Hunters! I made this new thing called How To Speak Canadian. Here's why: πŸ€” Problem A couple months ago I moved to Toronto, Canada. The problem is that even though I speak English fluently and lived in the States for more than a decade, I found myself struggling to pronounce many "Canadian" words. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ For example: Toronto's "Times Square" equivalent is the Yonge-Dundas Square. Yonge? Is that Yonjee or Yongay? Neither, it's Young. Also, Queens Quay, Quayside and Quay West are streets and neighbohoods in Toronto -- but how do you say Quay? Apparently it's just Key. 🍁 Solution I talked to many of my friends here and they shared other words they struggled with here too. I quickly realized that there are dozens of words that are tricky to pronounce, so I made this chrome extension that solves my problem. But not just myself. This chrome extension is perfect for anyone new to Canada - visitors, ESL students, immigrants and even aspiring immigrants. My buddy @dannyjpwilliams who recently moved to Toronto from Halifax said "this is not just for immigrants. I’m still struggling with how to correctly pronounce Spadina πŸ˜‚." So maybe it's for Canadians who're moving to Toronto too. Let me know what you think! I will continue to add more words and improve the pronunciations of words. Do you know any words I should add here? Comment below or tweet me. πŸ™ Shout out to @rrhoover for nudging me to write this comment.
