There are no easy hacks to game HN. Its audience is notoriously critical and its algorithms and moderators extraordinarily fine-tuned to weeding out noise, self-promotion and mediocre content.
I've been reading HN for almost a decade, but never participating much in the discussions. I thought I knew a thing or two about how it works and after having a couple of submissions get no traction, I silently gave up hope on reverse engineering a winning strategy.
Michael's course goes further than I imagined possible. There are many things about HN that I didn't realize and there IS a methodical way of thinking about your content to increase your odds of it doing well. Michael shares his methods with you and shows successful examples in his course.
You're still going to have to put in the hard work, and write an excellent piece, but Michael's course is the best resource out there to help you shape that piece so it gets to #1 on HN.
I've been an avid HN user for about 4-5 years now and recognize Michael's posts on the platform. They typically get a ton of engagement and land on the front page. You might remember him from his quitting google post.
I've been watching his course creation process as he built in public on Twitter and the course looks to have some spot-on advice.
Some advice that I think is very relevant which Michael shared recently, is to not produce content outside of your level of expertise. You can write about complicated things you don't quite understand on HN, just don't pretend to be an expert. You'd have to come at it from a learner's narrative.
His content has been very useful for me as I'm preparing to do a Show HN for a product that might resonate with the HN crowd.
Thanks Michael! Good luck on the launch today :)

Michael has an impressive track record (almost 20 front page posts!). It's hard to put into words how valuable that experience is for someone marketing for their own project or technical startup. Michael's content allows you to short-circuit the learning process - it's hard to game the system, but he's done a lot of the work for you to figure out what works and what doesn't.
I'm working through the course right now for my own company and it's already proven incredibly useful for me. If you're a tech blogger, startup founder, or early employee, I'd highly recommend checking out HFPHN for tips on understanding HN, choosing successful topics, and adjusting your writing style for maximum uptake and quality.
