Glitch is an open-source esports platform. The project's goal is to lower technological barriers for live media solutions by allowing communities to decide on the right feature sets, not corporations. With contributions from diverse communities, everyone benefits from the combined thought power.

How do you maintain consistency if the product feature roadmap is driven by the community? How do you avoid a situation where a group takes the product features in a direction because they form a majority today and then another group with a larger majority in the future decides to take a different direction?

@oukomadu That's an amazing question! What I want to do is create a product where multiple communities can go in different directions at the same time but still be unified by a similar code base. With that goal in mind, I'm working on developing the solution in a way that is extendable for different use cases but keeps the same core.
This is still in the early stages but using the React frontend as an example: https://github.com/Glitch-Gaming...
In the source code, there are three folders:
- Constants
- Utils
- Templates
Now the template is supposed to be able to hold multiple different templates, and the template is lazy loaded through a configuration variable inside the App.js. This means anyone can fork the repository and add their own template that will not be added back to the main repo and only be used on their private servers.
In the Constants and Utils folder, everything is an object. How I envision this working is the templates will have a bootstrap function that can change the objects functionality in the Utils and Constants specifically for that template. This way, they can extend those functions without having to change the main code base and still be able to receive updates as the main code base progresses.
Hopefully, as this gets further developed, different communities can go in their own directions but still use the same core codebase.

@devin_dixon1 thanks for the detailed answer. It makes sense.
Congrats, Devin! Glitch looks amazing. What are the main use cases for developing a custom streaming solution?

Hey! This looks pretty cool! As an esports fan, I'm wondering how specifically you're going to target/penetrate the Asian market? Specifically Korea and China?

Hi Devin,
I really like the styling done on this, very nice and sleek. With that being said I have a few questions for you if I may.
What is your vision for glitch and where would you like to see glitch in the next 5 years?

Glitch is an open-source esports platform allowing others to easily build their own live-streaming solutions.
The big problem being tackled is that building a live media solution is often costly for development and hosting. COVID has fast-forwarded the use of live video and audio. However, because of technical barriers, only companies with budgets can take full advantage of this growing trend. The result is that niche communities are underserved, and opportunities for innovation are missed. I see this project impacting:
- Esports
- Live Shopping
- Live Events
- Live Film
-Anything live you can envision
Glitch is designed to serve as a starting point for communities, entrepreneurs, and developers to build their custom solutions and fill in the gaps being missed. The code is downloadable and comes with commonly used pre-built features such as video conferencing, live streaming, voting, tipping, product placement, social tools, stripe, user management, and more!
I started building this on Nov 7th, 2022, so the project is only 22 days old. I am looking for the following:
1. Other developers that want to help maintain and grow the project.
2. Feedback on what feature should be added.
3. Connections to communities that could build on top of technology.
4. A team of co-contributors to take this further and have a community-led passion project.
I think if your focus is on things other than esports (live shopping, events, and film), then I think the marketing should reflect that, and it should be marketed more as a livestreaming open source project with similarities to Twitch rather than an esports one.
Otherwise great product!

@richard_gao2 I agree! To launch a product, I tend to find focus is invaluable. A jack of all trades is a master of none, and there isn't the current bandwidth team bandwidth to be effective in those other areas. Like I was asked to integrate Shopify and Square, but I don't have time to implement and figure out the UI/UX and do esports at the same time.
But as contributors come onboard, the plan will be expand the solution to fit other verticals.
@devin_dixon1 Good plan! I would definitely focus on esports first. It seems to be a market with lots of room to grow.

Looks interesting! Do you have to be technical to build a streaming platform using Glitch?

@darrel_frater1 Great question! The short is no, the long answer is yes.
The product has been in development for about 22 days, it is not even a month old, so right now it does require a developer to setup.
The long-term vision is to integrate the product with one-click installers or into fully managed App Platforms. For example, Amazon offers a product called Light Sail, in which a person can install solutions like WordPress, Drupal, Magneto, and other site builders without coding. I've already started to develop a template system in which the template can be made interchangeable.
Eventually, I want this to be included into Light Sail and other managed app platforms.
So the long-term vision is to get to the point where the system does not require a developer and the functionality can meet most uses.
