I’m a VC, and I built Fishwrap because I needed it. In short, I was getting tired of tracking 30 different publications every day (especially when 95% of the content was irrelevant to me), and I was finding Google News Alerts increasingly horrible: Duplicative stories, totally irrelevant articles, mostly outdated content, and extremely limited in scope, since a lot of the most credible publishers (NYT, WSJ, etc.) block Google News spiders. Since I come out of the news industry, and have cofounded five companies, I figured, what the f***, I’ll just build something myself. The result was Fishwrap, which enables users to explain who they are, and what they need, using plain English. So you can say, “I work at a fintech and want to know about any new startups that target wealth management,” or enter a personal prompt like, "I have a child with asthma, and I want to be informed of any new treatments, products, trials, technologies, therapies, or other developments impacting her condition." The system then generates truly customized insights from sources globally. And, unlike Google Alerts, Fishwrap AI doesn’t simply regurgitate headlines and first paragraphs: It explains why the item is relevant to you and only you, based on the prompt you provided. It's worth noting Fishwrap was designed from the ground up to respect intellectual property rights, comply with applicable laws, and operate ethically within the evolving legal landscape governing AI and digital publishing. We utilize publicly available APIs and licensed data feeds provided expressly for syndication and discovery; we comply strictly with the Terms of Service of every API and data provider we use; and we never scrape news websites, bypass paywalls, or access content through unauthorized means. And privacy was the dominant driver from Day One: Unlike Google, we never sell our list, never market to our list, and never let third parties gain access to our list.
