Although it does indeed improve sound quality, it doesn't handle Bluetooth headphones, and is basically impossible to uninstall. I eventually ended up with Boom, which is kind of expensive, but works very well.

I found this small hidden gem thanks to the mighty power of Google: it's surprisingly capable, even if from time to time it's a bit buggy. It hasn't the easiest UX, but for a free product, it's well worth a shot!

Just found this, and can't wait for eqmac 2. Wish it wasn't a menubar app. I have so many that I have to close others to see it :(
