This may sound slightly ignorant... But what's the difference between this and a helicopter?

Wait, isn't this just a helico... 😜 Whatever it is, this is really neat. In @fitztepper's TC article, he says: "The drone is about 4.5 feet tall, weights 440 pounds, and will be able to carry a single passenger for 23 minutes at a speed of 60MPH." But what's most compelling about this is that it's autonomous. Passengers simply enter a destination and sit. I hope Uber buys them. 😉

@katesegrin By design helicopters are more complex, apart from engine the blade assembly itself has lot of mechanical tech (Cyclic) to help maneuver the aircraft (https://youtu.be/04tJmP2aqcw). This also increases points of fails, specially when jet engine comes into picture. A helicopter rotor rotates at fix rpm to keep centrifuge forces in balance and it uses blade pitch to change angle of attack. Compared that to a drone model, the mechanics is far more simple. RPM of 4 motors controls the maneuver and instead of having one powerful motor it will have 4 less powerful electric motors. Even the avionics responses by simply changing the rpm of motors and because of its simplicity its far more easy to respond and correct. Drones can do crazy things. Drones are ideal when its all electric, electric helicopters are difficult. Jet fuel aircraft gives more endurance, electric drones have shorter flights.

I expect to see it used in the next James Bond. He will just slide out of it and begin skiing down the mountain while the explosion of the ehang starts an avalanche the consumes all the bad guys but JB manages to escape... LIKE A BOSS

The Ehang 184 is one of the coolest things I've seen. It does, after all, make sense to make drones bigger have have them fly themselves :) More signs that the future is here, just not evenly distributed yet ;)

@nivo0o0 I think it's a little too early to say the future is here - all we've seen so far are renders, I don't believe that this thing can actually fly. Power/weight on electric motors isn't that good.
