love that we are moving to tech that pulls us back into the world instead of out of the world. It's about high quality story telling. Appreciation for what is and what was. History and Life.

@aplusk I love that the product at its core encourages you to look up at the world instead of down at your phone. No fiddling with a paper map or tapping buttons on your phone to go to the next section of the tour; the app even uses location to make sure it's at the right point in the tour. This is really the vision of technology blending into the background.

@aplusk Agreed. Reminds me of other startups like HowAboutWe for instance, that uses tech to get you to discover new experiences with your SO, rather than giving you a new chat app.

I have a friend that's exploring a similar idea. At first blush, the idea of audio tours sounds fun and I can imagine it would be engaging but I'm skeptical people will continue to use it far beyond the initial test drive. How often will there be new content/stories that people want to listen to while moving around their city (which is where the majority of people spend their time). The traveling use case counters this but these opportunities remain infrequent for most people (e.g. you might go on vacation once or twice a year). Audio also has its challenges in that (1) you probably want to use it with headphones so you must be carrying them with you, (2) the effort to put on headphones is higher than simply tapping an app icon, and (3) it's mostly a single player experience so you're probably not going to use this when exploring a city with family and friends. That said, @andrewmason has thought a lot more about this than I have and I have a hunch he's taking a bet on on future tech interfaces (e.g. Google Glass or something like it). Thoughts, Andrew? :)

@rrhoover I gotta disagree with you on this one. Not every product has to be used on a daily basis. There is a huge gap in my life for awesome, intellectually satisfying things to do on weekends. I just moved to New York and I could easily see Sonia and I spending $10-15 each on these tours and making a day out of it, to explore the city. And that's just beyond the obvious and awesome use-case of vacations.

@nbashaw 100% agree that not products needs to (or can) be frequently used / a daily habit. E.g. I rarely travel but when I do, I immediately go to Hipmunk because it's the best way to search and compare flights. Your use case (moving to a new city) is a great one. Perhaps Detour will provide a seemingly endless supply of stories but it seems as though it's geo-graphically limited. Either way, I'm excited to try it out and my skepticism may be reversed as soon as I get a chance to play with it -- I'm a great beta tester, @andrewmason. ;) Would love to hear @nireyal's thoughts on this.

@rrhoover I understand - I think it'll make more sense when you use it. I'm going to be taking people out every couple of days to test, I'll let you know and maybe you can join me? That goes for everyone in SF.

@andrewmason count me in! Perhaps you can work with @zachacole who organizes @StartupHike in SF.

Forget about debating/forecasting if it will become a hit or flop. This is a really cool idea & the way it's presented is super warm (rare for new tech). Rooting for @andrewmason to succeed.
