We kept hearing the same thing from IT and security teams at hospitals, banks, and government agencies: they wanted a real team messenger, not a stripped-down open-source project, but every option that looked good ran on somebody else's cloud. Tools like Slack are great until compliance asks where the data actually lives. Self-hosted alternatives exist, but they're a decade behind on features and a pain to run.
So we built CometChat AIR: a full team messenger, channels, DMs, threads, voice and video calls, files, search, that deploys entirely inside your own environment and is air-gapped by default. Spent a couple hours with it and the self-hosted setup was way smoother than expected, everything just worked on my own box. The opt-in AI add-ons feel like a nice touch instead of being shoved in by default.
The fact that AI, moderation, translation, and push are opt-in rather than shoved in by default is such a refreshing choice. Nice to see a team messenger that respects simplicity first.
