ButterShare allows you to share files of any size directly between devices without the need for cloud storage or sign-ups. With a simple 3-step process, you can send files instantly using a 6-character room code. The service ensures privacy with end-to-end encryption, making it ideal for sharing large files securely.

@anirban00537 , I'm a user of WeTransfer so this is a very compelling solution. You mention it is peer-2-peer, how secure is this and how does it handle firewalls etc.
Hey@codeandseaBrent! Great question.
1. Security & Encryption:
ButterShare uses native WebRTC with mandatory end-to-end DTLS encryption (AES-GCM). This means your data travels through an encrypted tunnel directly between the two browser instances. Our signaling servers (running on Cloudflare edge Durable Objects) only exchange connection metadata (SDP & ICE candidates) to negotiate the handshake—not a single byte of your file ever touches a server, disk, or cloud bucket.
2. Handling Firewalls & NATs:
For standard Wi-Fi, home, and mobile networks (~85-90% of transfers), STUN handles NAT traversal to establish a direct device-to-device P2P stream. When users are on restrictive enterprise firewalls, university networks, or symmetric NATs where direct P2P is blocked, ButterShare automatically falls back to an encrypted TURN relay. Even in TURN mode, the tunnel remains end-to-end encrypted—the relay only shuttles encrypted packets and cannot decrypt the contents.
Let me know if you give it a spin!
@anirban00537 Thanks for the detailed explanation, I will definitely be testing it out the next time I need to share large files. I'll be happy to let you know how it goes.
since it's peer-to-peer with no cloud in between, what happens if the sender's tab or laptop lid closes halfway through a 50GB transfer - does the receiver just lose everything and you start the whole thing over, or is there some resume-from-where-it-broke support? that's the scenario that'd make or break this for actually large files over a slow connection.
Hey@galdayan! That's a great question.
Here’s how it works in real-world scenarios:
1. If Wi-Fi flickers or briefly drops:
The connection automatically pauses and picks back up once you're reconnected—it won't restart the whole transfer for a momentary glitch.
2. If your phone screen turns off or locks:
The transfer keeps running in the background without getting paused or killed by the phone.
3. If you're sending multiple files:
Each file is saved to the receiver’s device the moment it finishes. If you’re sending 5 files and the connection cuts on file 4, the first 3 files are already safely downloaded on their device.
4. If the sender closes the tab or shuts their laptop lid:
Because ButterShare is 100% direct device-to-device with no cloud storage in between, the sender has to stay open while a file is actively transferring. If the sender's computer goes to sleep or the tab closes halfway through, that transfer stops and would need to be restarted.
What we're adding next:
We're currently building a resume feature so that if a huge file gets interrupted, both sides can reconnect and finish downloading right from where it broke off rather than starting from zero.
Really appreciate the great feedback!
@anirban00537 that's a fair tradeoff for a no-signup no-cloud tool honestly, most people would rather have zero data touching a server than a resume feature. the per-file save-as-you-go behavior for multi-file sends is the detail I didn't expect, that alone makes a dropped connection way less painful than losing the whole batch. good luck shipping resume.
