Bit Sketchy!

A simple drawing party game where no skill is required

Bit Sketchy! is a simple, in-person drawing party game I built as a personal project. One device with the app sits on the table to show the drawing prompts for everyone to draw. After the round is finished the secret judging criteria is revealed, and the discussion begins... It’s intentionally simple, not about drawing skill, and mostly an experiment to see whether the concept is fun. I’d love feedback from anyone who tries it. Available on the iOS & Mac App Stores

What do you think? …

Hey, I’m the maker. This is my first app and mostly a learning project. I wanted to see if a very simple, in-person drawing game could still be fun. Would love any feedback or ideas/themes for prompts.

Congrats on shipping your first app! Really like how you're testing the core mechanic first—a simple in-person drawing game with surprise judging criteria is a clever way to see if the format itself has legs before building more complexity. Looking forward to seeing what feedback shapes this into!

@zeiki_yu Thanks, I really appreciate that. That was exactly the idea, keep it as simple as possible and see if the core concept is actually fun before adding any extra complexity. I'm definitely curious to see what direction it ends up going based on feedback.

By seeing the picture it does not seem like your first project 😅. I fully didn't understand the gameplay, but i think it's going to be fun. How can I try it out?

@aadi_720 Thank you so much! I’ve played around with front-end design and a bit of coding in the past, but this is my first real attempt at building and publishing an app, so I’m really happy to see it being well received.

To try it out, the “Visit Website” button should take you straight to the App Store page (currently iOS only), or you can search “Bit Sketchy!” on the iOS App Store.

@o_san ohh 😮. Does it have a website?? I am an android user. It is better recommend to create a website. or use framework like react so that you can develop for both android and ios at the same time. I really wanted to check this out

@aadi_720 Thanks for the suggestions! Since this was mostly a personal project, I prioritised iOS to start with. I did build it using React though, so hopefully it won’t be too difficult to publish an Android version as well. I’ll definitely look into it when I get a bit more time and will update you when it’s available for android.

Seems like could finally be a fun replacement against the 1001th round of Cards Against Humanity. Suggestion - when timer runs out, could save the user two steps by making going to reveal the criteria automatic - maybe a short animation that the rounds over and criteria is about to be revealed, to save on user friction.

Make sure to enable music listening even for when user has device ringer off, and possibly a less shrill alert sound for end of timer.

Music is very nostalgic with Mario Paint/Wii vibes!

@devonlastapp Thanks for the feedback, this is really helpful!
I totally agree about the criteria reveal, currently a few too many steps, an animation transition seems like a nice solution.

Thanks as well for the tip about enabling music when the ringer is off, I’ll look into that. And yes, I’m definitely keen to find some better sound effects. Glad to hear you think the music suits.

will this be free with ads or paying from the get go?

Oliver_S

@gllsrssx Right now it’s completely free. Since this started as a personal project for the purpose of learning, monetisation hasn’t been my main focus.

In the future, I might add optional extra prompt and criteria packs, but I’d like the main game to stay fully playable for free.

Is this a game? What are the specific gameplay mechanics?

Oliver_S

@riley_evan Hi! Yes, it’s a game. Sorry, I didn’t go into much detail in the main description because of the word limit.

It’s designed to be played in person with two or more players (the more the better). One phone or device with the app sits on the table, and everyone else has pens and paper. Each round, players get a quirky drawing prompt, ranging from very simple to a bit more conceptual.

The twist is the judging. When the timer finishes, a secret judging criteria is revealed, and players vote on which drawing best fits that criteria. The criteria are intentionally a bit odd, so it’s not about drawing skill, more about discussion and having a laugh.

It’s a simple game, but I think it works well with friends. Would love your thoughts if you end up trying it.

Lovely idea and - so far - good interaction design! Keep it up!

My feedback:
- In the AppStore it says "designed for iPad" but the in-store images show a phone; what is it?
- The somewhat longer criteria seem to be cut off on my iPhone SE (2020): I see "The one that belongs in a modern art m", and "The one that makes the best tato".
