When my old clock radio died, I developed an app for myself. My previous clock radio, and any replacement I could find, was too bright at night. I made sure my app dims so deeply that my room stays dark. Also, my partner is a paramedic on shift, so I wanted to make sure the alarms could support rosters that are not 7-day week based, like 2 days / 2 nights / 4 off.

I have used the app with my phone sitting on a charging stand next to my bed for years. Since I’ve retired, I’ve improved the app and made it ready for others to use. I called it Bedside Radio. My beta testing group helped me with further improvements. They found the app really easy to use, with a simple UI but plenty of features.

I’ve always enjoyed having a clock radio by my bed. It helps me fall asleep, wake up, and have something to listen to during the night. I love to listen to stations in places I have lived or visited. In the evening, I listen to Australian Radio National. In the early morning CJAD800 or WBEZ (the traffic reports remind me of places I used to go - haha). Sometimes KCBX, CBC 1 Montreal, various BBC stations or 891 Adelaide. I also like to listen to local radio when I travel. When I'm trying to learn a language I like to listen to stations in that language. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten very far with learning languages! Too much time on other hobbies.

I do have friends who are fluent in a few other languages, so I have localised the app as well as I can with their advice. If you have any suggestions to improve the translations I have used, I would love to hear them please.

I have now released Bedside Radio on the Apple App Store for iOS. I have introduced it at a Black Friday sale price. It is a one off purchase, because that's how you buy a physical clock radio.

Bedside Radio has plenty of handy features, even more than are listed on the web site (https://bedsideradio.app), but these don't complicate the simple main clock face. The channel buttons (or presets) can be set to a radio station in the included database, an offline playlist from your Music app (good for when you are off grid), or by entering a streaming audio URL. The radio station database is being updated regularly, and can be refreshed when you please.

I’m pretty happy with where Bedside Radio is now, but I am still working on it. I hope you like it too and also let me know how I could make it better.
