What do you think? …

Bram Kanstein (@bramk)
this is awesome, as @marckohlbrugge said this is much more intimate, hearing people's voices really adds something to the experience. Love the fact you don't have to signup.
Jonas Brandau
@bramk Hey Bram! Happy to hear that you like the concept. Some say we should add voice filters, but we actually believe that hearing 'real' voices adds to the magic of our content.
Bram Kanstein (@bramk)
@jonasbrandau Agree, real voices are awesome cause you don't see who the person is :) one comment though: when I exit, kill the app and start it up again, the intro screen with howto/video plays again.

There's no way I'll confess anything salacious, considering everyone seems to call me out on Secret (which is just text). :P @jonasbrandau what do you think about masking the identity even more with voice filters and face pixelation (or something similar)? I can't imagine anyone sharing anything too secretive on Awkward as the voice isn't masked and the faces are still somewhat recognizable with the subtle blurring.
Jonas Brandau
@rrhoover Interesting thoughts! And you're right, people within your network will probably be able to tell who you are. So we are actually thinking about using geo location to make sure your confession will only be visible to people that are NOT close to you. Awkward is about sharing embarrassing stories with the world, not with your network. That being said, for the next release we are going to increase the maximum blur level to give users more control over anonymity.
Ryan Hoover
@jonasbrandau geo-location segmentation could help but it still gives me doubt that my friends back in Oregon won't see it and if there's any doubt at all that I'll be "revealed" I won't share anything too secretive. Using one's Facebook or contact list connections might be more safe.
Bram Kanstein (@bramk)
@rrhoover As stated above, perhaps don't touch the voices but I guess pixelation works a little better (as an extra) to conceal identity.

Anyone try this yet? I don't have an iPhone. Sounds like Secret with video.
Marc Köhlbrugge
@mscccc Yes, I've tried it. I guess conceptually it's a lot like Secret, but having the video and, perhaps more importantly, hearing people's voices makes this a much more initimate experience. Another important difference is that (right now?) there's no social graph (there's no sign up process at all!) and videos can be voted on so the most interesting ones move up top. I find it a very intriguing concept and the UX is top notch. Definitely worth a try.

I hate that their domain doesn't match their actual app name. But otherwise, love the app. Really interesting use of music in the background of the entire experience.
Jonas Brandau
@danlev I totally aggree with you! Unfortunately awkward.com is used for some crappy family photos =/ But we'll get that domain sooner or later!
Benjamin Hoffman
@jonasbrandau lol let's post it to producthunt - http://awkwardfamilyphotos.com/

Here's a personal message from us to you guys, the @ProductHunt community, using @Awkward_App ;-) http://www.awwkward.com/60582023

@jonasbrandau well played, Jonas. That made me smile.
Mack Flavelle
The music thing is so interesting. Found it made a couple of the videos hard to hear but served two purposes: Worked as a jingle- will always associate that music with this app. Created a kind of consistency through the whole experience- set the tone, wasn't porn music, wasn't epic classical music. Very effectively communicated the culture of the app.
Jonas Brandau
@MackFlavelle Thanks Mack, we are working on normalizing audio levels to ensure that you can hear every word! :)
