Astral

A Performance-First Version Control System

Astral is a modern, performance-first version control system built in Go. It uses content-addressable storage with BLAKE3 for fast hashing, strong security, and automatic deduplication. Astral removes the staging area and commits directly from the working tree. Designed with concurrency at its core, it prioritizes simple internals, clear workflows, and correctness. Not a Git replacement, but a clean-slate experiment in modern version control.

Thanks for checking out Astral! Astral is an experiment in rethinking version control from the ground up. It removes the staging area, uses BLAKE3 for fast, parallelized hashing, and is designed for modern developer workflows. I’d love to hear feedback from engineers who’ve wrestled with Git at scale—what frustrates you most about version control today, and what would you want a modern VCS to do differently?
