Hi Product Hunt Community! ππ
We, the team of a11yphant, are very excited to launch our project here on product hunt. We'd appreciate your comments and feedback! β€οΈ
How did we end up here? π¦ΈββοΈ
In an ideal world, all websites are designed and developed in a way that everyone can use them. Sadly, many websites do not comply with web accessibility guidelines. Therefore, people with impairments are barred from using them.
One of the main problems is that many developers don't know enough about web accessibility. We want to improve this situation by giving them a tool for learning accessibility in a fun, interactive way.
What is a11yphant? π€
a11yphant is an interactive online course for web accessibility. In this course, you will revisit web development topics from an accessibility perspective. For example, how to make sure that assistive technologies like screen readers can interact with the website? Or, what is the purpose of the different semantic HTML elements? These are some of the things you will learn by writing meaningful markup and completing quizzes. π
Features π
Various accessibility topics are split up into short challenges. On a11yphant you solve coding levels π» and single-choice quizzes β Β in each challenge. Each level teaches you one thing at a time. Our evaluation provides you with detailed feedback on our success criteria. If you struggle to solve a challenge, hints will help you out.
Since we are web development students, we are no accessibility experts. We just wanted to share our project with you, to hopefully make the world a more inclusive place. So, if you find an accessibility issue, please let us know.
Weβd love π for you to check out a11yphant and let us know what you think! π¬
@magdalena_maislinger Thank you for your interest! We want to focus on creating challenges for beginners first. More advanced challenges are definitely on the roadmap, though. π
Congratulations on your product! It will be great help for web developers (myself included). Will there be more content in the future? Especially since web technologies are always changing.
@natasha_troth Thanks a lot! We plan to publish more challenges in the future. Since it is very complex to put together the right tasks for a challenge, it will take some time. But we'd love to hear which topics you want to see up next! π

Congrats!
Looks really great, a fun way to learn something that should be obvious for any web developer!
Yes making a website fully accessible is hard, but unfortunately many developers don't even pay attention to the basics (doctype, headings, button vs a etc..)
Good idea to make signup optional to avoid friction π
Are there other challenges in the works (medium and hard ones)?
Hope the launch will be a success and that you'll get some traction!
@jontravens Thank you! A lack of the basics is exactly what we have experienced ourselves.
Medium and hard challenges are on the roadmap. We want to focus on creating challenges for beginners first. But we hope that we will get started on more advanced challenges soon.
What a great, forward-thinking product. Accessibility should become a standard in any website nowadays and I love these challenges/quizzes which make learning about implementing accessibility fun :)
