From a Rural Engineer's Casual Conversation to the Birth of "Nowa" App
It All Started with a High School Reunion
I was born and raised in a small rural town. After graduating high school, I moved to Tokyo to study computer science at university and eventually became a software engineer. The distance between my hometown and Tokyo felt much greater than I had imagined, and I naturally grew apart from my high school friends.
However, a few years after graduating from university, many of my friends also moved to Tokyo for work. When someone suggested "Let's get together like old times," we decided to organize a reunion with our nostalgic group.
That's when it happened. During the bill-splitting moment, as I was calculating everyone's share on my phone using a web-based tool, one of my friends said something that would change everything:
"Isn't there an app version of this bill-splitting tool? The web version feels kind of clunky to use."
The Gap Between Engineer and User Perspectives
Honestly, I was confused at first. As an engineer, I thought web apps were more convenient. No installation required, just share a URL and you're ready to go. No account registration needed – just pure simplicity. I believed this was the ideal design approach.
But watching my friend's reaction, I realized they had a completely different perspective. For non-technical people like them, "apps" seem to provide a sense of security that comes from installation – a feeling that it "becomes yours" once you download it.
This was an eye-opening moment for me. It was a user psychology blind spot that I, as an engineer, had completely missed.
Creating Value That Overcomes App Disadvantages
However, apps have a clear disadvantage: the barrier of requiring installation. To get users to overcome this barrier, I knew that simply providing the same features as existing bill-splitting tools wouldn't be enough.
This led me to a design philosophy of being more feature-rich while still allowing lightweight usage when needed.
Specifically, I decided to include account functionality but enable anonymous login, and create a system where users could still use it lightly by just sharing a URL. This way, I could maintain the convenience of existing web tools while providing app-specific features.
Discovering Real Needs Through Friend Gatherings
While thinking about rich features, I realized something important. When friends get together, there's actually a lot more management needed beyond just bill splitting.
For example, the first challenge is always scheduling. It might start casually with "How about this weekend?" but as the group size increases, keeping track of everyone's availability becomes surprisingly complicated. When you're exchanging messages like "How about the 5th?" "What about the 12th?" in a LINE group chat, information gets buried quickly.
Once the date is set, you need RSVP confirmation. "So who's actually coming?" becomes a common question, and it's not unusual for the headcount to change on the day of the event.
Furthermore, schedule sharing is crucial. You need to organize detailed information like "What time and where to meet, what activities we'll do, and who should bring what."
I hypothesized that if I could solve all these challenges with a single app, it would provide enough value to outweigh the "installation hassle" disadvantage.
The Birth of "Nowa"
This is how "Nowa" was born. It's an all-in-one app that provides everything needed for friend gatherings: scheduling, RSVP management, itinerary planning, and bill splitting.
When we actually started using it, the centralization of information that was previously scattered across different tools significantly reduced the organizer's burden. Participants could also resolve questions like "What time are we meeting again?" or "How much do I owe?" within a single app.
Global Expansion and Multi-language Support
As development progressed, another hypothesis emerged: "Getting together with friends" is a universal need that exists not just in Japan, but around the world.
Friend gatherings, after-work events with colleagues, family outing plans... While cultures may differ, the act of people coming together to plan events is a universal human behavior.
With this in mind, I released the app with support for three languages: English, German, and Japanese. I was particularly interested in the German market, as I'd heard that the culture of splitting bills among friends is even more established there than in Japan.
Looking Forward and Seeking Your Input
Currently, Nowa is steadily growing its user base, but I feel there's still plenty of room for improvement.
I'd really appreciate advice on features:
Are there any parts of the current functionality that feel awkward to use?
What new features do you think would be useful?
Any UI improvements you can suggest?
I'd also love to hear your thoughts on global expansion:
Other countries or regions that might have strong demand
Cultural considerations I should be aware of
Marketing strategies for international markets
Who would have thought that a casual comment from a friend would lead a former rural high school student like me to create an app? Life really is unpredictable. But perhaps it's precisely because this product was born from a familiar, everyday problem that it's able to address real user needs.
I encourage you all to pay attention to those moments when you think "this is slightly inconvenient." There are probably seeds of new ideas hidden in those everyday frustrations.
What do you think? Does this story resonate with similar experiences you've had with friends or colleagues? I'd love to hear your thoughts on both the technical aspects and the potential for global appeal.
