I moved to Portugal last year with my fiancé and wanted to learn Portuguese, but I hit a wall. Every time I tried to speak, people would either switch to English (which is out of kindness, I understand) or just talk to my (native) fiancé and leave me out.
I was doing 3/4 hours a week of private online lessons at first, which definitely helped me get through the grammar and basics. But my speaking was just stagnant.
So I built something for myself: an AI-powered app that lets me roleplay real-life conversations, make mistakes, and get gentle feedback. Then I decided to add more structure to it by adding content similar to any CERF-based course.
After a few weeks of intense testing… a strange side effect happened: I started having full conversations with taxi drivers and was able to answer phone calls! It was a really fun thing to experience especially since I wasn't focusing on learning during the development, I just had to get through the app's content while testing but that side effect was really cool to witness.
