Why I built this
Most salary numbers online give you one figure with no context. Knowing you make $80,000 doesn’t tell you much on its own. What matters is how that compares to people your age, in your line of work, and in the place you live, and how far that same paycheck would go somewhere else.
I work with data for a living, and I wanted a tool that answers the questions people actually ask: Where do I stand? Am I behind or ahead for my age and occupation? And if I moved, where would my income give me more room to breathe?
This site pulls together public data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Bureau of Economic Analysis so you can see your position clearly, without a paywall or a sign-up. The “Where to live” tool takes your income and shows how comfortably it covers rent, home prices, and everyday costs across 387 U.S. metro areas. The same income can be tight in one city and comfortable in another, and seeing that side by side can help you plan your next step, whether that’s negotiating a raise, changing careers, or deciding where to build your life.
These are estimates built from public statistics, not financial or relocation advice. My hope is that they give you a clearer starting point for your own decisions.
