Hi Product Hunt, I'm Erik from Switzerland, and I make Gerty. There are more than two million open AI models out there, and plenty of them run well on a Mac. The hard part is knowing which ones. Every Mac has a different amount of memory, every task wants a different model, and getting them running still means terminals, file formats and a lot of jargon. LM Studio and Ollama make it easier, but you still choose and set up every model yourself. Gerty does that part for you. It measures your Mac, picks the strongest open models for each job (chatting, writing, code, understanding pictures and making them), downloads them and puts them together as one assistant. You choose a package, Gerty shows you the download size, and then you just ask. Because it all runs on your Mac, it can work with the things you'd never paste into a cloud chatbot: - Ask a folder of documents a question, scans included, and see the file and page the answer came from - Find mail and draft replies in your own writing style - Read and add calendar events, reminders and notes, and run your Shortcuts - Ask out loud from the notch, with a voice that also runs locally - Point Claude Code, Codex or aider at Gerty's local API instead of a cloud Anything that changes something is shown to you first, and you can undo it. No account, no telemetry, and it works offline. Honest limits: it needs Apple silicon and macOS 26, it's not open source, and the biggest cloud models are still better at the hardest reasoning. the honest limits section is a nice touch. roughly how big is the first download on a 16 GB Mac?

@neerajnathany Thanks! On a 16 GB Mac the first download for Gerty Max is about 18 GB in all. The app itself is 340 MB; the remaining space is models, picked for that Mac:

- about 8.5 GB for chatting: Gemma 4 E4B, which also reads pictures, plus a small model that routes each message

- about 9 GB for making and changing pictures

Gerty shows the size before anything downloads. Searching your documents by meaning adds a 330 MB model the first time you use it.

Picking models for the Mac in front of you is the part I like here. A local assistant is much easier to try when choosing the model isn't the first job.
