Nothing in the output tells you. A barred 7 becomes a 1. A superscript next to a bracket becomes a 12. A fraction bar shot at an angle becomes a minus. MathGPT shows you the transcription first, as editable maths. One glance, one keystroke to fix it, then solve. That's the whole idea, and it costs one extra click. Three other things that came out of using the competition: • Check my work — paste your own attempt and it names the first line that doesn't follow, instead of handing you a replacement solution. Almost nobody has this, and it's the mode that actually teaches. • A real formula keyboard, so "1/x+2" can't be misread. • No account anywhere, including photo upload — which is exactly where most solvers put their login wall. Plus 326 formula reference pages: statement typeset properly, what each symbol means, worked examples with the steps shown, and the mistakes people actually make with it. Honest limits: it's a language model, not a computer algebra system. It can slip on long arithmetic, which is why every answer ends with a substitution check you can read.
