I run outbound dialers, and the built-in answering machine detection in Asterisk/VICIdial was the weakest link: agents kept getting handed voicemails, and real people got dropped as machines. VM Hunter started as a simple idea — stream the first two seconds of each answered call to a speech engine and classify the greeting — and it grew from there. Working with real call-centre traffic changed the approach a lot: we added tone detection for beeps and disconnected numbers, learned to read how someone stops talking (a person pauses for you, a recording doesn't), and built handling for iPhone and Google call screening, which every AMD I've seen just hangs up on. This week's launch includes the second-generation engine, plus ready-made clients for VICIdial, FreeSWITCH, and Twilio, so it's a ten-minute install rather than a project.
