Parenthesis is a note-taking app for your Mac. Write plain text notes, see them connected in a visual graph, and add AI only if you want it - with your own key.
I'm a solo dev and skipped the $99 Apple Developer cert to keep the price down, so it's currently unsigned. Just Right-Click -> Open from your Applications folder the first time to bypass Gatekeeper!
Hi Product Hunt! 👋
I’m Shashank, the builder behind Parenthesis.
I got exhausted by modern note-taking apps. Between locking my files in proprietary cloud servers and charging $10–$20/mo just to chat with my own notes using AI, it felt like the tools were getting in the way of the work.
I wanted speed, privacy, and full control over my data. So, I built Parenthesis.
It’s a lightning-fast desktop editor built on Electron and Vite, designed around three core principles:
100% Local: Your notes are just plain .md files on your hard drive. Zero cloud lock-in.
Bring Your Own AI (BYOAI): Plug in your own API keys (OpenAI, Claude, Groq) to chat with your notes. No middleman servers, no proxy latency.
Visual Connections: A built-in knowledge graph that instantly maps out how your ideas link together.
Because you bring your own API key, my server costs are zero. That means no subscriptions—just a $25 one-time lifetime license.
I’ll be hanging out in the comments all day. I’d love to know: what does your current note-taking workflow look like, and what’s the one feature you wish your current editor had?
Let me know what you think!
(P.S. To keep the price low as a solo indie dev, I skipped the $99 Apple Developer tax for V1. Mac users: you’ll see the standard Gatekeeper warning. Just Right-Click -> Open from your Applications folder the first time!)
