Hey everyone! My name is Nate and this app came from some conversations/asks from friends and family about app safety for kids. As a dad myself, I realized that telling people what was good or bad never really stuck. It was my thoughts/opinions vs someone else's.
What makes one app more dangerous than another?
I couldn't answer that honestly and realized that was coloring what I would say to my kids when they asked.
So I went down a rabbit hole: litigation records, news articles, research papers focusing on TikTok, an app my wife and I both use that my oldest was asking to use. Turns out TikTok has real predator risks, but also real creativity/community benefits. The answer isn't a solid "no", it's falls into a possibly but there's things you need to know and be able to handle first.
That gap between parental fear and actual information? That's what Guardian Collective solves.
My goal is to empower parents to have open and honest conversations with their kids based on real data, not fear.
THE PROBLEM:
Parents don't want surveillance tools. We don't want to be creepy. But we DO want to understand what our kids are using and WHY it matters.
Bark/Qustodio are built around control. I want to build Guardian Collective around understanding and communication. "Know the risk. Have the conversation."
HOW MY THINKING EVOLVED:
I started thinking this was just a ratings website (like IMDb for apps) but talking to a local parent group changed that. They don't just want ratings; they want to KNOW. Real-time. They want to see: "Oh, my kid is using TikTok again and spent X hours on it. Let me check the risks. Let me talk to them informed."
That's why we're building the mobile companion next; it's not about watching them, it's about being an informed parent.
THIS IS EARLY:
We are building out the app dashboard and ratings for the web dashboard. But we're just getting started. This has been a passion project built nights/weekends while working full-time. I am committed to building this idea and am looking for your feedback here vs my small focus local group.
What's missing? What would make you actually use this?
Looking forward to your thoughts.
