I built EMMA. She's an AI that lives on your computer instead of on someone else's server.
The thing that started it: every AI I used forgot me the moment I closed the tab, and everything I'd ever told it was sitting on a machine I didn't own. So I built her the other way round. EMMA's memory and
identity live above the model, as plain local data that belongs to you. Swap the model, restart, come back in two years — she still knows you. The model is disposable. She isn't.
What she actually does:
Runs fully local. On Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible server, on your own hardware. No account, no signup, no server for your words to go to.
Remembers you for life. Across sessions, restarts and model swaps. She greets you already knowing you. You can export her entire brain to one file and carry her to a new machine.
Acts on your machine. Real agent work on your files and apps — gated by a confirmation dial (full / ask-first / locked), per-action undo, an instant panic stop, folders she's forbidden to touch even in
full-send, and a hash-chained audit log of everything she has ever done. She can do everything, and nothing is hidden.
Dreams. Overnight she consolidates your day into a morning briefing, connects threads across time into hunches about what matters to you, and can sleep on a problem you hand her — the answer waiting at
breakfast. It's the part that makes a remembering AI feel alive.
Encrypted at rest. A stolen copy of her brain is unreadable without your key, which lives in your OS keyring.
On privacy I'd rather measure than assert. Fresh install, default settings: zero non-loopback connections while idle, 37 UI requests and 0 external, and every socket during a full chat turn was 127.0.0.1. Pull
your ethernet cable mid-conversation and nothing changes — there's no server for it to miss.
Two honest things before you download her. She's as smart as your hardware lets her be: on a decent GPU she's genuinely capable, on an old laptop she'll be slower than ChatGPT. That's the trade for keeping
everything yours, and I'd rather say it now than have you find out ten minutes in. And the builds are unsigned, so Windows and macOS will warn you — it means unsigned, not unsafe; SHA-256s are on every
release.
