I bet there are days when you take a look at your e-commerce data, and it makes you want to drive up the wall and say grrr..... I can relate to that feeling. It's hard to read the different insights and metrics (and we didn't even mention the interpretation), especially when it comes to your customers' behavior.
Ever gone window shopping? Of course you have - we all have. Window shopping is fun! Sometimes it results in us making a purchase there and then, but most times it doesn't. However, window shopping can give us ideas and it can encourage us to revisit a certain store at a later date.
Do you know what makes your eCommerce store successful? Which strategies work best to increase your revenue? Understanding what's driving your business is the key to ensuring future growth. That's why eCommerce KPI-s is a must. Measuring performance can help you grow your revenue, but only when you track the right Key Performance Indicators (shortly KPIs).
Even with all of the tools that are available today, there are two huge problems that exist when it comes to data. The first is numbers decoration or sometimes called "data puke". This is the barrage of numbers with the purpose of making data look full and appealing.
Imagine you are flying today from San Francisco to New York. You see the pilot walking down the ramp, greeting his team and getting settled in his seat to begin the flight. Imagine that he does not check his dashboard with the recommended speeds, he doesn't check the flaps, doesn't properly request takeoff and he doesn't even check the weather.
Not all metrics have equal value. If you don't learn to focus, you'll be drowning in an ocean of numbers. On the other hand, if you determine which metrics are the right one, you can simplify your life and still run your store with confidence.
This guide will teach you everything you need to know about eCommerce Analytics. This is the most comprehensive guide to became data-driven when running an eCommerce store.

I can't speak for the rebranded version, but piwik was a great analytics solution and paired well with many popular CMS flavors. For example, Dreamhost used to offer it as a one-click goodie for easy management, and it tied in well with WordPress.

Deserves to be mentioned as it's around for quite a while. It was recently renamed from Piwik. Not sure about performance side but don't know any other which could compete with Google Analytics feature-wise.
