I’m new to Product Hunt. Now what do I do?

Product Hunt is the place to discover your next favorite thing. Explore the latest in tech, listen to inspiring podcasts, procrastinate with a new game or get lost in a book.

§How do I get started?

The first step is to explore Product Hunt and sign-up for the email digest.

The next step is to register. Once you register you become part of the Product Hunt community. Now you can:

  • Upvote the things you love. When you do, it is saved to your profile. 👍
  • Create fun collections. 📲💻
  • Subscribe to a LIVE Chat and ask our guests a question. 💬
  • Shop for cool new things.

§What is a Collection?

Collections are simple way to bookmark and curate the things you love. Here are some ideas to get you started.

§How do things end up on the homepage?

Every day, new things are submitted, upvoted, and curated by the community and the Product Hunt team. The homepage changes throughout the day based on the number of upvotes, time since submission, and other factors*.

* Of course, we cannot reveal exactly how the algorithm works or it might be gamed. 😺

§I really want to join the conversation. Why can't I comment?

Anyone who registers can upvote and collect products; however, Product Hunt isn't prepared to open the discussion to the world. We're working hard to scale the product and team so that more product-loving folks can join the conversation. Meanwhile, we're giving existing members in the community the ability to invite new members to join.

§How do invites work? And how do I get an invitation?

Commenting and posting permissions are granted to those that have been nominated by someone in the community. Invites are granted each week to the most engaged and thoughtful contributors based on a variety of factors. Those with invites available can nominate others by submitting their Twitter username on the Invite page.

If you do not know anyone that has an invite, please know that those that demonstrate active participation on the site (e.g. upvoting products, creating collections) and thoughtful discussion on Twitter (we’re watching!), may also be invited to join.

I want to submit something to Product Hunt - what’s the process?

§How do I submit things to Product Hunt?

Anyone that has been invited to comment in the Product Hunt community is able to submit things.

After logging in, click the "+" button in the top right and submit the product's URL, name, and tagline. Each post should include the:

  • Category - e.g. Tech, Games, Podcasts, Books
  • Name
  • URL - Direct link to the product page (avoid links to press or blogs)
  • Tagline - Very short description of the product (make it catchy!)
  • Images

If the product, book, podcast or game hasn't been submitted before and meets the community guidelines, you will be highlighted as the hunter for that product.

§May I post something I made to Product Hunt?

Absolutely! Product Hunt is also a place for makers to show what they’ve built, get feedback, and connect with other enthusiastic people. After doing so, feel free to introduce yourself and provide a brief description of what you made and why.

§What happens after I submit something?

Every day, hundreds of things are submitted to Product Hunt. Unfortunately, not everything can make it to the homepage, but those that receive credible upvotes from the community, rise to the top.

§I submitted something and I don't see it on the homepage. Why? :(

Every day, hundreds of new products are submitted to Product Hunt. Unfortunately, not everything can be featured on the homepage. In some cases, products are flagged for removal if they do not meet our community guidelines.

Visit your Product Hunt profile to see your product submissions.

§What is the Upcoming feed and how does it work?

With exception to some of the early community members that helped get Product Hunt off the ground, all submissions to the Tech category first start in the Upcoming feed. Once the product has received a significant number of credible upvotes from the community, it will be promoted to the homepage within 48 hours. We encourage everyone to explore this feed and upvote products you’d like to see featured.

§Do you accept submissions for unreleased products?

We encourage people to submit launched products that are available to play with immediately; however, the occasional crowdfunded, pre-launch, or private beta submission is acceptable if it provides thorough information about the product (e.g. clear video with a product feature walkthrough) and proof that it's not vaporware. That said, we may remove pre-launch submissions and recommend founders to wait until their product has launched before submitting.

§What about things that have been around a while?

People visit Product Hunt to discover new things. While most submissions should be for new products, occasionally lesser known hunts are equally loved. Since "new" is subjective, we reserve the right to remove submissions that may be well known within the community.

§May I post updates for things previously submitted?

Product updates must be substantial, such as the launch of a mobile app or complete product redesign with new functionality, to be considered for resubmission. Email hello@producthunt.com if you believe your update is substantial, so we can consider whether the update warrants a new post.

§What do those gold stars next to products represent?

Gold stars highlight exclusives — special discounts or early access offer just for the Product Hunt community. Levle, Front 2.0, and Interbot are a few past examples.

§I'm launching a product and would love to offer a Product Hunt exclusive. How can we set that up?

Awesome. :) Product Hunt exclusive launches often get more love and attention. Here are a few guidelines:

  1. Make it special. Offer a meaningful discount (if it’s a paid product) or early access* not available to the general public.
  2. Introduce the exclusive. Your landing page should mention the offer (e.g. “Hello, Product Hunters! Get 30% off with code, ‘PRODUCTHUNT30’”). Feel free to keep it simple, or get creative like our friends at Algolia.
  3. It has to be new. Like all posts on Product Hunt, the product must be new to the community. Sorry, no reposts.

* Unfortunately, we cannot accept TestFlight or limited release betas. The product must be useable/downloadable immediately for everyone on Product Hunt.

§Can I ask my community/friends/family to upvote a product?

Please don't. People should upvote things they genuinely like or find interesting, not because they were peer pressured to do so. Feel free to spread the word and bring friends into the discussion, but asking or incentivizing people to upvote may trigger the algorithm to drop the product in the ranks or remove it from the homepage entirely.

§Why is my submission below [insert name here] when I have more upvotes?

The list(s) change dynamically based on the number of upvotes, time since submission, and other factors*.

* Of course, we cannot reveal exactly how the algorithm works or it might be gamed. 😺

§Why are posts removed?

Posts may be removed from Product Hunt if they are duplicate, off topic, offensive, submitted by a company Twitter account, or in violation of our Terms

We know, nobody likes rules, but we have to set some guidelines. :)

§Can you remove my post?

Once something has been submitted it is rarely removed. In fact, we keep posts of things that no longer exist so that there is a record of the community discussion at the point it was featured on Product Hunt.

§My cat wakes me up every morning… its claws are sharp. What should I do?

Ouchie! Sorry, but we can’t help you with the cat situation.

§How can I join the discussion on something I created?

Log in with your personal Twitter account under your name and shoot us a tweet at @ProductHunt so we can give you access. Once you're in, feel free to briefly introduce yourself in the comments. Pro tip: those that answer questions and actively engage in the discussion (examples here, here, and here) tend to get more attention and appreciation from the community.

§Does Product Hunt make money from the Shop?

Yes, we do.

§I live outside of the U.S., can I shop on Product Hunt?

We're starting with the U.S., but our goal is to have our shopping experience mirror the diversity of our community. Let us know where you'd like to purchase things and we'll let you know when products are available in your country.

§What does the "M" badge represent?"

Founders and makers of the product often join the conversation, answering questions and sharing their story. These people are highlighted with a fancy, green "M" badge.

You bet! We have a lovely iOS app available now and plans to release an Android app in the future (sorry, no ETA yet!).

§Do I need to disclose that I’m invested or advising a company I post to Product Hunt?

Product Hunt is a place for authentic, honest conversation and we highly encourage people to disclose any potential conflict of interest in the comment thread.

§My product was submitted by someone else before we’re ready. How can I have it removed?

Sometimes people in the community are eager to be the first to post something they like, even if the product isn’t fully “baked”. If yours is submitted and you’d like it unfeatured, please contact us at hello@producthunt.com. Please note that it’s unfair to the community to re-post your product if it’s already been featured for a significant amount of time.

§My unfeatured product was submitted a while ago by someone else before it was ready. How can I resubmit it?

Uh-oh! We understand products evolve and it's only fair that they're given another chance to be discovered by the community. If you've made substantial updates to your product since it was first submitted, please email us at hello@producthunt.com so we can help!

§Can our company account vote, comment or be part of the Product Hunt Community?

Product Hunt is a community of individuals, so company accounts cannot participate in the discussion. It is best to have humans from the company who contributed to building, creating, writing, producing the thing that is being featured comment and get involved with the community directly.

§How can I subscribe to the Product Hunt email digest?

Every weekday (or every Monday if you prefer) we send an email digest highlighting fantastic product collections, new feature announcements, top upvoted products, and other fun stuff not available on the Product Hunt site. You can subscribe here.

§Does Product Hunt generate revenue from purchases made on the site?

Yes, we do. We earn revenue from products purchased through the Product Hunt Shop. We also earn affiliate revenue from 3rd party sites such as iTunes and Amazon.

§Where are my keys?

Sorry, but we can't help you with that. You'll have to hunt this down yourself.
