"Stream ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC & more. Never run out of DVR storage space. 6 accounts, 1 price. $35/month. Cancel anytime." Is it just me or does "DVR" sound incredibly antiquated? DVR was always a hack to get around the real-time broadcast schedule. That said, I'm definitely interested in this as someone who hasn't had cable/satellite TV since I moved ou… See more

@rrhoover Agree re:DVR. Do I need to schedule a recording? Seems nuts.
Jeff Fedor@jfedor
@rrhoover could've been worse. They could've said "tape as many shows as you want"

@rrhoover DVR antiquated? Yes, but it's something that the average consumer understands.
Ryan Hoover@rrhoover · Founder, Product Hunt
@jimmydouglas true. Same reason why Apple calls it a "Watch". 😬

@rrhoover DVR is a solution to can save contents without infringing the distribution rights agreement... because the "live" and "VOD" have a different distribution rights. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@jimmydouglas @rrhoover : I wonder if in the future they'll drop the "DVR" and just say "storage"

@rrhoover it seems totally antiquated to me too. Specially cloud-DVR when the concept should be to watch on demand previously aired content.
Matt Gardner@thatmattgardner · Co-Founder, RouteThis.com
@rrhoover I assume this is an interim step until the digital distributors have the upper hand. Then this can shift to "on demand any show that ever aired on these channels: ____"

@rrhoover DVR is just a familiar name for "watch a program after it's live hours". I'm sure they're going to do things that scale (meaning, they'll create stand alone versions of each "show" and users can watch it on-demand, probably using Google Ads over the ads actually shown on the network)

@jimmydouglas @rrhoover Well the average cable consumer is around 50. I'm siding with Ryan on this one. >In 2015, broadcast median ages continue to rise, with CBS at 59, ABC and NBC at 54, Fox at 49, and CW at 44. Roughly 45% of all ad-supported cable networks measured by Nielsen have median ages of 50 or higher. http://www.mediapost.com/publica...
Jimmy Douglas@jimmydouglas · COO at Vault
@kay0stheory I don't disagree. I think YouTube wants to sell this to as many people as possible, including those people who are 50 years of age, or more.
Stefan Von Imhof@divineprofit · Senior Product Manager, HG Data
@rrhoover Beats saying, "Never run out of space on your TiVo!"
Aviv Junno@avivjunno
@rrhoover I think this is more Youtube TV then Youtube TV :D https://www.producthunt.com/post...
Matt Zuvella@professorz · Marketing Director @ FamePick
@rrhoover it was a pure marketing play against Directv Now which doesn't have a recording option
Rick Ellis@aysrick · Managing Editor AllYourScreens.com
@miscalzoncillos @rrhoover And there are a lot of unanswered questions about the DVR function. On most of the competitors, the DVR function only saves a recording for 28 days. Why that length? Because the content owner has to sign off on the DVR option and they are willing to do it for a month because that is the maximum length in which ratings/views can be … See more

@rrhoover I'm thinking DVR is just what people understand. Take Playstation Vue, they also call it "cloud DVR", but in reality you're just tagging shows that you want to keep for 28 days that Playstation already has ondemand. You just can't view it unless you explicitly add it to "My shows".
Michael Doran@sempervigilius
@rrhoover They need to be more specific. I recently cut the cord so this interests me. I bought the Channel Master DVR+, and have a Sling subscription, but Sling won't let you record its shows. you have to stream them live. When Youtube says never run out of DVR storage space, what DVR is that? Do they have one in the cloud?
