Scan a QR code with your phone to get in... Seriously? Has anyone tried this? Impressions? See more

@rrhoover i don't see iPhone here. Wait is this an official WhatsApp client? Android users how is it? It's a pretty neat way to solve the problem of having a web account with a phone# tethered messaging app despite the dodo-ness of QR codes

@rrhoover Also not yet iPhone compatible apparently. But I do like the concept. Stigma about QR codes aside, this would be a seemingly very secure way of logging in to a web interface. To the user it's a single factor authentication but the security of a two factor. Not as easy as a traditional email/password combination but I would bet it's far, far more … See more

@rrhoover Mostly a reply for the benefit of others who might be tempted to work out what the code is, but this QR code isn't a URL ;-) It's three base64 encoded binary payloads (of 112, 32, and 16 bytes in length respectively) separated by commas with no immediately obvious pattern to them (though I'd put money on one of them being a HMAC or an encoded time… See more

@mg Check out how Telegram does it. You authorise new device using a code sent to Telegram on another device. Simple and elegant. QR codes are all the rage in Asia apparently but never took off in the US and Europe.

@rrhoover This is because it's not a true web service. It appears to be using a handoff (Android to Chrome) and relying on the device connection to transmit messages. Here's the screenshot from my first login: http://cl.ly/image/030L3k1h232P There is further evidence of this in WhatsApp's FAQ (https://www.whatsapp.com/faq/en/... WhatsApp Web is a computer … See more

@rrhoover @christoy This is a unique authentication code – not meant to be shared.

@rrhoover @mg I see... in which case I'm ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@rrhoover @christoy @mg It also expires after a couple of minutes

@rrhoover I think this might be the asian influence, lots of apps use this method to login there including WeChat desktop.

@rrhoover @christoy @mg It's okay, it's time limited :)
