Comments on “Things 3.0
Niels van Renselaar@nielsvr · CEO at Codely
I always loved Things, but the pricing seems... off. 44 euro's for the desktop version seems a bit much? At first glance it's almost 400% more expensive then other paid task management apps. And that is with the 25% discount. If you want Things on all your devices; that will set you back around 70-80 euro's.
Patrick Thompson@neurohacked
@nielsvr Exactly. At those prices I will bite the bullet and live with Apple Reminders & Calendar like I have been for years.
Parveen Kaler@kaler · Mobile Application Consultant, Smartfu…
@nielsvr I've been using Things 1 and 2 for more than 8 years. Happy to pay $80 for all 3 macOS, iPhone, iPad Apps (and watchOS too). $80 is a drop in the bucket for Apps that I use every single day, year in and year out.
Vojtech Rinik@_vojto · Founder at Median.tech
@nielsvr Just be glad they don't do subscriptions... 40€ is actually very cheap given you're getting it for life... OmniFocus is about $40, Sketch is $100, Sublime is like $50... But come on, these are the things (see what I did there) you need for your work.
Patrick Thompson@neurohacked
@kaler I definitely agree. I'm actually a little envious that I can't justify the cost of Things because it is a beautiful app. I'm just not busy enough to take advantage of all the features it has to offer. I find that Reminders and Calendar work well for my basic schedule.
Lasse Rafn@lasserafn · Apricot
@_vojto things (3 at least) seem to not be so focused towards work, anymore 👎🏻 I'm torn.
Niels van Renselaar@nielsvr · CEO at Codely
@_vojto I'm happy they skipped the subscription model. Still, I find it hard for myself to justify the amount for something like a todo manager. Although it looks and works great.
Jakub Kusmierz@jakubkusmierz · Co-owner, Secret Holding, LLC
@_vojto @nielsvr Please don't say the s-word. You might give the dev ideas.
Stefan Kracht@stefan_kracht · Founder of Stickerlicio.us
@nielsvr I get your point, but for an app that you are using on a daily basis that's a fair price. Especially when a subscription model would be the alternative. I tested the Mac and iOS version and they are close to perfection.
Maz Ameli@mazameli · Product Designer, Metabase
@lasserafn In what way does it not seem to be focused towards work anymore?
Lasse Rafn@lasserafn · Apricot
@mazameli guess I remembered wrong; but sharing/collab. and attachments are lacking (and seems to has always) so its not a change. My mistake
Maz Ameli@mazameli · Product Designer, Metabase
@lasserafn Ah, gotcha. Yeah, I've found I use Things exclusively for managing my personal work and life tasks rather than for collaboration. For collab at work, I've almost always found that my teams are already using some kind of other more robust system like Jira, GitHub, or Asana. For me, Things hits the sweetspot for that always-with-me to-do list that's… See more

@nielsvr Exactly. Great app, crazy price. I stay with Todoist
Bjorn Larsen@bjorn · Communication Thinking
@stefan_kracht @nielsvr Microsoft To-Do is already more perfect IMO. And it's free.
Michal Wlodarski@mwlodarski · Product Manager, EuropeMountains.com
Fantastic update. Pricing is right. If the 3 is going to stay here for 4 years it will cost me (iPhone+Mac) just 12,5 Eur per year. One Euro per month. Cannot beat it.
Stefan Kracht@stefan_kracht · Founder of Stickerlicio.us
@bjorn @nielsvr I'm very happy to pay for an app these days :)
Troy Christmas@troychristmas · Co-Founder, TaskClone & RepeatPost
@nielsvr I want to give Things a longer look, but the closed universe thing always causes me problems in the end. I can sync with Reminders, but was hoping for more. Beautiful though.
Bryan Clark@bryanjclark · mobile @ Khan Academy
This app is gorgeous (on all 4 devices - iPhone, iPad, Mac, Watch) — worth every penny; they've been working on it for years and it's an app you'll use every day. The animations are flawless, and the list-management interactions make every other list-managing app feel like a clunker. I'm hoping they'll open-source some of these animation goodies so others ca… See more

Absolutely incredible. The previous versions of Things are some of my favourite app designs of all time, and this looks like it improves substantially on the experience. Loving it on iOS and Mac so far. Looking forward to giving this a proper test drive, I'm pretty sure this is going to become my go-to task manager. Special shoutout for the incredible aesth… See more

I may have gone too fast on the product page, but it seems we can't actually share tasks or list? I pretty much clicked on this thread expecting this, as a long-term customer, it makes me a bit sad :( Beautiful UI though.
Lasse Rafn@lasserafn · Apricot
@jmlebeau it's not possible I think 👎🏻 seems like they totally ditched important aspects of work
Bartosz Bąk@bartosz_bak · ux / ui designer
49 euros for desktop 9 for iphone and 19 for ipad, are you out of your mind guys? What kind of sale methodology are you guys using? Is it better to sell apps for 80euro to 100 or for 30 euros to thousands of people ... or maybe your infrastructure is just not ready for crowds. I would love to use all of your apps but not for this price, sorry!
H.Murchison@hmurchison
@bartosz_bak Cultured Code doesn't typically do annual updates. Say you buy the whole suite...they probably won't have a major revision for 2-3 years.
Vojtech Rinik@_vojto · Founder at Median.tech
@bartosz_bak I honestly thought that by "are you out of your mind" you meant how cheap it is.... Please realize how hard it is to have a sustainable business with one-time fees.
Bartosz Bąk@bartosz_bak · ux / ui designer
@_vojto I'm aware of how business works especially when it comes to that kind of products. With all due respect Vojtech. I think product is overpriced and cutting price a bit would have better impact on sales, basically, you could sell more for a bit less ;)
Stephen M. Levinson@stephenmarklevi · Design @Vimeo @Cameo
@_vojto @bartosz_bak But a users concern isn't how the company sustains it's business. They priced this bc it benefits them, not the customer, which in my opinion, isn't how you treat users.
Pietz Prove@gopietz · Media Computer Science Student
@stephenmarklevi i agree with you. it's not the customer's job to justify the price from the business perspective. $50 for a desktop todo app is expensive. i can easily see that it may be worth it for some, but it's a tough sell nonetheless. that being said i catch myself complaining about subscriptions and now i also complain about high selling prices. may… See more
@bartosz_bak @_vojto Is there analysis leading you to say it's overpriced, or do you mean not in general, but specifically just for your use case?

I love Todoist but this is so clean I may have to try it out. I remember how beautiful Things was when it first came out.
chris@chrisdolle
I've used this throughout the last couple of months in beta and it's honestly great. It does JUST enough to be a powerful tool without doing too much, which is apparently a really hard thing to do. My only complaint is the lack of shared tasks, which means I have to keep using either Todoist or Reminders in addition to Things, but it's definitely worth che… See more

@chrisdolle Yeah, plus it doesn't seem to allow for IFTT recipes so I can do stuff with trello.

I only tried the macOS version, but I must say it's the most beautiful piece of software I ever tried on my Mac.
Locke Ann Loebbed@lockeannloebbed · Geeky graduate student
Now, the pricing I don't have that big of a problem with. Its competitors aren't cheap either (e.g., 2Do, OmniFocus). Plus, the design is truly gorgeous. I'd dare to say it's simply the best on the market. But no iCloud or third-party (e.g. Dropbox) sync is a deal-breaker for me (or am I wrong in thinking that it doesn't?)
Pawel Kubasiak@pawelkubasiak · founder, senior ux designer
@lockeannloebbed Actually I like that concept a lot, it's good to keep your data private. When you are using Things app, you are not a product in person. I mean every data about you is not a company product to sell bigger players on the market, like in competitors apps. Things 3 on Mac and iPhone are great, congrats for designers and developers for rising t… See more

@pawelkubasiak I concede the point that it's good to keep your data private, but I wonder exactly in what sense Things Cloud is private. If by that you mean they don't *use* your data in anyway, my bet is that neither does iCloud nor Dropbox. Here my concern is mostly with convenience -- I tend to be reluctant to sign up for another service just so I can syn… See more

Two up front caveats: 1. This is an amazing app. I'm just enumerating the things I wish were different. 2. It's totally possible I have missed features. I wasn't part of beta, so have only been using today. No web component No durations No priorities LOTS of taps to get things done (e.g. to move Task in Inbox to a date, tap once, tap calendar, tap date,… See more

Is it possible to display the tasks with due date directly in the macos calendar app?
Kris Puckett@krispuckett · Designer and destroyer of coffee.
It's so gorgeous but the lack of shared tasks/lists is a huge miss. The price makes sense and is worth supporting developers. The missing 3rd party features, plus the lack of collaboration make switching back to Things challenging.
Dimo Trifonov@denull · Founder of @feeld
Only if Trello had that design.
Niesha Kennedy-Robinson@nikenn · Publicist
@denull I was thinking its very similar to trello which is free

Looks like I have just found a new replacement for Wunderlist (rip). Regarding the pricing, it is like 10 cups of coffee guys, so I don’t find it that bad...if they keep it updated of course
Sebastien Barrau@sebastienb · Co-founder, htmlsig and passpass
Always loved Things and felt it was a step up from the others like Wunderlist and a few that died over the years but the price has always been the barrier. I understand all the hard work that goes into the app and I really like it but can't justify it. I purchased one of the first versions on iOS back in the day
