Do you guys delete the transcript once we've received it? What are the privacy policies on the transcripted information?

@gaurabc Hey, thanks for commenting! Your transcript will be available in our web viewer as soon as it's ready, and by default will hang out there for as long as you need it. If you want, however, you can always delete it and we'll permanently expunge both the recording and transcript from our servers.
@imjgoldsmith @gaurabc Great. But what about the privacy concerns? How is it secured? Is it encrypted once on the server and only encrypted on viewing?

@iduuck @gaurabc Hey Dominik, re: privacy concerns we've put a lot of thought into designing a human editor system that balances quality and privacy. Your call will never be heard for more than a small segment by any one of our team of globally-distributed editors, all of whom are under strict NDA to do their job. We use industry standard encryption to keep your data secure in our Amazon storage servers, and only serve our application over HTTPS. If you have any more questions feel free to shoot me a note at jon@asktetra.com!

Hey Product Hunt! We’re super excited to share Tetra with you and hear what we could do to make it as useful as possible. Thanks in advance for trying us out, and thank you to Jared for hunting us. Tetra automatically takes call notes for you. No more multitasking between note taking and talking when you’re on the phone with someone important — just focus on the conversation, and leave remembering details up to Tetra. How are we different from similar services? We don’t think automatic speech recognition alone is good enough yet to be usable, so we’ve carefully built human editing into the service to achieve quality without compromising on confidentiality. We’ve also built a notes viewer to make it easy to remember exactly what you were talking about. Read the transcript, jump to audio with timecodes synced to every word, and search for anything close to a phrase you remember speaking, so you can explore your notes for a call and never lose detail. But we’re just getting started. We look forward to your feedback on what else we can build on top of the current viewer experience to get closer to our goal of building an self-updating Evernote for your business. We’re giving everyone *an hour of calls for free*, so please check it out: just make an account, invite bot@asktetra.com to a calendar event, and we’ll call you when it starts. Drop me a line at jon@asktetra.com!

@imjgoldsmith @asktetra Love to hear more about the service - seems quite expensive with the current packages but when you say Full Transcripts are you talking about Human made Transcripts or AI/Machine Learning Speech-to-Text made Transcripts which are notoriously horrible :( ? If it is the first, it's still pricey but potentially understandable, if it's the 2nd, wayyyy too expensive. Definitely also want to hear about the privacy topic and more importantly what sort of encryption are you using to protect our data...
Jonathan Goldsmith
@imjgoldsmith · Cofounder, Tetra
@exlemor @asktetra Hey Emmanuel, thanks so much for commenting. We promise accuracy on the level of human only transcription services, and agree that current speech-to-text tech isn't really ready for regular use :) Re: privacy, you always have full control over your data and the ability to permanently delete it at any time. To maintain confidentiality with our human editors, we distribute your call in small chunks to a globally distributed team, all of whom has signed NDAs. In addition, we follow standard web application security best practices and use many of the robust AWS security features to encrypt and protect access to your data in Amazon S3, where it is stored. Shoot me a note at jon@asktetra.com if you have any more questions!

@ambonium perfect! I'd forgotten then name!

@imjgoldsmith · Cofounder, Tetra
@ambonium @bentossell Hey Amrith, thanks for commenting! We're different in a few ways: * Clarke seems to obscure what happens under the hood: either they're using fully automatic speech recognition (in which case Tetra will be much more accurate), or they're using humans in the loop as well (their confidentiality policy seems really lacking: https://clarkeai.helpscoutdocs.c...). We try to be very transparent about what happens to your data. * Tetra focuses on search, synced transcript audio, and (coming soon!) more ways to explore your notes vs. Clarke's summarization, which really can't be done well with current AI techniques (also seeming to indicate it's just a human wrapped in a chat layer) * We weren't able to sign up for Clarke to try it behind their waitlist but Tetra is open to everyone now!

@daminkk Hey switchbackhunter, thanks for the kind words. We’re actually able to offer our service at half of what most transcription services would quote you today ($1/min = $60/hr) thanks to our speech recognition technology, but we understand that that might be expensive for many still. We do offer your first hour of calls for free so I hope you’ll have a chance to try Tetra out and see if you find it valuable. Can I ask what you were thinking of using the service for?

Nik Liolios
@niklio · Cofounder @ Tetra
@dredurr We transcribe phone calls. Right now you can either schedule a call by inviting bot@asktetra.com to your calendar event or press a button on our website to start a call now. Accept our call, merge it with another line and we'll send you back the transcript and notes. If you're planning to record your podcast over a phone we can transcribe it with links intact. We're exploring other ways to record or upload audio. Let me know if you have any suggestions!

How do you choose your editors? In my past experience, the service quality reduces when volume increases. Also, why is the service so costly, it's almost 30USD an hour which is way higher than what I would get with a fully manual transcription service.
Jonathan Goldsmith
@imjgoldsmith · Cofounder, Tetra
@iamnotmanish Hey Manish, in our experience transcription services like Rev.com start at $1/min ($60/hr) and can't promise turn arounds of less than 24-48hrs, while Tetra has a 6 hour turnaround or money back guarantee.

Interesting product. Obviously, privacy should be well thought out, from how the audio is distributed to transcribers (sounds like you have thought about that), how it is stored (are you HIPAA compliant if there are medical discussions?) and while it may seem that one could say "well you asked for it to be transcribed, therefore I can assume you are comfortable with others listening to the call" - I would spend time with lawyers to get it right. It will be the quickest thing to shut down your company. Also, there seems to be a small bug in Chrome (at least for me), where the text under "Invite bot@asktetra.com to any calendar event" cuts off the last digit of the phone number. There is also no apparent way to change a phone number/profile. Given your pricing structure (human transcription is not cheap!) you are targeting the SMB/prosumer space. As you move up that chain, security/privacy are going to be paramount. Great idea and solid early product!
Nik Liolios
@niklio · Cofounder @ Tetra
@micah @asktetra Hi Micah, thank you for your feedback. We're storing all of your data with industry standard encryption. We're not HIPAA compliant today but we are working on it. We are not making the assumption that our customers are okay with Tetra listening to their calls. Here's how we're addressing that: 1. We split your call up into short segments so none of our editors have any context for what you're talking about. 2. Our team is globally distributed so editors could not reconstruct a conversation. 3. All of our editors are under NDA. Thank you for letting us know about the phone number being cut off. It's fixed now. I've also just added a page where you can change your phone number under the Account menu in the top right. We are absolutely focused on the security of our service and we know it will make our break our business. If you have other concerns, don't hesitate to contact us.

Very cool. I liked the straightforward approach - it's clear that speech to text is not perfect and I liked the solution. That being said - privacy would be the biggest concern for me. Another thing is accents I guess..
Jonathan Goldsmith
@imjgoldsmith · Cofounder, Tetra
@liorowsky Hey Lior, we try to take as many measures as we can to protect privacy with our approach: we split your call into small chunks before distributing to a global team of editors, who are all under NDA. Accents will always be tough, but I think our human editors are uniquely suited to providing high-quality transcripts especially when compared with automatic speech approaches.

Great idea but just like some other commenters pointed out, very steeply priced. Makes me wonder if there is any service that can listen to my Hangouts/Skype calls, transcribe everything and email the transcript. Nothing fancy, just plain unedited text with misheard words and all, so I can extract key points after the call. I'd imagine this barebones approach would be very cheap, though super useful = superb value.
Jonathan Goldsmith
@imjgoldsmith · Cofounder, Tetra
@janklimo Hey Jan, we actually built Tetra originally with automatic speech recognition only and found it to be so inaccurate that it was useless most of the time. Even a single incorrect word can completely break the meaning of a sentence, and ASR systems can have accuracy as low as 40% in bad conditions (noise, multiple speakers, accents). That's why we developed our hybrid AI-human approach to get the accuracy of human transcription services with enough effiency gains to offer it at half of the usual price ($.50/min vs $1/min.) I hope you'll give us a shot with your free hour of calls and see for yourself if we're worth it. Drop me a line at jon@asktetra.com if you're interested in learning more, but needless to say we have something in the works at lower prices as our internal speech recognition software gets more accurate ;)
