Hi everyone. Matt from StartUp here (cofounder of @abexlumberg). We're excited to have you listening. We really are building this company in real time, and documenting it as we go. We would love to hear what you think of the show. There's a new episode coming next week. Subscribe on iTunes (or your favorite podcast app) to get it: https://itunes.apple.… See more

@mlieber Congrats on the launch, Matt! Big fan of Alex's work and am looking forward to checking out StartUp. I'm an iTunes guy. I usually download podcasts onto my iPad nano and listen during runs and bike rides.

@mlieber I'm a Downcast user myself, although been thinking a lot about what @mazzeo mentions in Eps 2. If I had to guess, I think the key to unlocking a whole new set of podcast listeners would be to offer some type of functionality that makes podcasts more easily skimmable. So much good content is buried in 1-2 hour long episodes. Making the best snippet… See more

@kaz I agree. I've seen some products out there in beta which attempt to do this. We are targeting 20-40 minute episodes because that's the length of a typical commute or a workout. But we also want to experiment with shorter stuff as well.

@mlieber Like @kaz I was thinking shorter... I'm not thinking, what if there was something like Circa for podcasts? I'm not sure how it would fully work--I'm just riffing here.

@mlieber some shows, like yours, are totally worth the full 20-40 minute listen....and as long as a show is interesting I'm fine listening for 60-90+ mins. Just so much other good content going undiscovered/consumed because it's lost in rambling :) Which products in beta are you keeping an eye on?

@mlieber Great work so far!...As far as apps go, I enjoy Overcast for iOS. There are nice features for speeding up the episodes (track speed + silence shortener).
Matthew Lieber@mlieber · StartUp, cofounder
@brentmulligan Thanks Brent! yeah, I like overcast as well, for how clean and elegant it is. I cannot abide silence shortener though! Silence is part of the magic, at least for me.

@kaz We have some friends at Clammr (@clammrapp) who have put together something like an instagram of audio. They're stealthy right now, but always looking to add thoughtful early adopters to their private iOS beta who are interested in using the product and giving feedback. Email them at betateam@clammr.com if you'd want to get on the beta waiting list. … See more

@mlieber I love Downcast. Bought it for both my phone and desktop and have been syncing between the two for quite a while. There's still a crash here and there but restarting the app always fixes it without issue.

@mlieber I'm definitely a fan of Overcast now. I was forced to adopt it because Swell was bought by Apple--and was forcefully shut down. But, Swell's recommendation engine was very good. That's actually how I found Planet Money!
Matthew Lieber@mlieber · StartUp, cofounder
@McCroden That's cool about Planet Money. That's a great show. It'll be interesting to see what kind of moves AAPL makes in podcasting. They're baking it into iOS 8, which we're psyched about. I still find discoverability to be a huge challenge as a listener, and for me the best way I learn about new podcasts is still word of mouth.
Stuart McCroden@mccroden · (undefined)
@mlieber I said it at the time and still think it's true: Apple is going to rip the recommendation engine out of Swell and it will be an improved Podcast Genius, if you will. It was really good. Another great one it found for me: 99% Invisible. Point of this, is I think the recommendation part is possible to do, but difficult. That said, I'm not sure why S… See more

@McCroden I'm thinking there'd be a huge advantage to talking with a company like http://clarify.io/ to index the content and build out tags automatically. Happy to make an introduction if you think there's a conversation to be had there @mlieber
